United Way asks a million dollar question

The
57th annual United Way of Union County campaign kicked off last week, seeking to raise $1 million for the second straight year. The community-wide fall fundraiser achieved record-level giving of $960,000 last year, a four percent increase from 2012. It will take another four percent increase for United Way to achieve the milestone mark.
Claibourne trustees build new building

Anyone
traveling on Route 37 near Route 4, has noticed the construction of a new storage building. The Claibourne Township trustees have worked for several years, trying to develop a plan to build a much needed storage facility to house township equipment used for the cemetery, roads and bridges in the township.

Council sets date for Trick or Treat

Council members met Monday evening and determined the annual village Trick or Treat event will be scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 7
p.m. The 31st is on Friday this year and council did not want to interfere with the popular Friday night football games. Police and fire and EMS personnel patrol the streets during the event making sure little ghosts and goblins are in a safe environment.

Union County Sheriff’s Office, Memorial Hospital of Union County and the Union County Drug Free Coalition are working together to hold a prescription drug “Take-Back,” a national program of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), hoping to reduce pill abuse and theft.
North Union School Board hears concerns about Common Core

Elgin FFA Alumni Reunion and Recognition Night

Elgin High School FFA chapter, has been chosen as a finalist to compete
for a 2014 National Chapter award from the National FFA Organization. The local chapter was recognized as a top 10 “model of innovation” finalist in the student division at the national level. They also earned
a “three star gold chapter” designation in the National Chapter Award program. The Elgin Local School district will be honoring their FFA chapter in a pregame ceremony before the varsity football game against Highland High School on Sept. 26. The school district is excited about this extraordinary accomplishment and encourages the community to come out and show its support.

Village prepares for maintenance on water tower

villages have maintenance schedules for their equipment to ensure operations work properly. During last year’s inspection of the village water tower, council was told that it looked pretty good. Now it
is year 11 of the maintenance schedule and council doesn’t want any surprises.
