Bill Rose, Jr. died last Wednesday, Jan. 28, leaving a void in many areas of the village.

School board accepts retires and rehires

The North Union Board of Education held their monthly meeting at the administrative offices Monday evening. They accepted the retiring of three long time employees, Diana Martin, Brad Lauter and Lisa McKinley. The purposes of retiring was to initiate earned retirements, effective as the end of the work day of June 26, 2015 (Martin); May 31, 2015 (Lauter); and May 29, 2015 (McKinley).

Due to weather conditions and delays last week, North Union middle and high school teams competed at Tri-Rivers  in double-header competitions with other area schools last week. North Union teams won many honors. Listed below are the outcomes:

The first order of business at Monday’s regular village council meeting was the swearing in of Scott Jerew, as the new mayor of Richwood. He succeeds Mayor Bill Rose, Jr., who died last month from a battle with cancer.

VEX robotics championships announced

The North Union Middle School will host the VEX IQ State Championships on Tuesday, Feb. 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. Twenty-two teams of fourth, fifth and sixth grade students will be competing, including five teams from North Union Elementary and four teams from North Union Middle School.

To biologists, Canada geese are an outstanding conservation success story. Once extirpated from the state as a breeding species, Ohio now supports a healthy, growing population. However, to a landowner, they can be viewed as nuisances that create conflict.

Fair board makes plans for 2015 fair

The Richwood Fair board met Tuesday evening to begin making plans for this year’s Richwood Independent Fair. The dates for this year’s fair are Wednesday, Sept. 2 through Labor Day, Sept. 7. It takes nearly a year of planning to have a fair. Board members are discussing updates and improvements to facilities, securing entertainment on the grandstand and elsewhere during the fair. And two new members to the board, Derek Bevis and Cole Barry, are learning the ropes quickly.

Memorial Health Foundation offers access to grants

Memorial Health Foundation has joined with area nonprofit and government entities to establish a resource for organizations or individuals seeking grant or scholarship funding opportunities. The Marysville Public Library is the host site of The Funding Information Network of The Foundation Center, which will be accessible to the public in the near future. The Foundation Center is the nation’s largest repository for information about philanthropic grant opportunities from a wide variety of sources.

North Union FFA Celebrates National FFA week

Each year, North Union FFA and chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The weeklong tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington’s birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington’s birthday.  This year the FFA asked members to share experiences about FFA and its impact on students. The following is what was quoted from FFA members.

Two arrested in possible murder case

The Union County Sheriff’s office received a 911 call Wednesday, Feb. 18, from someone at 10500 Askins Road, reporting a man with a head injury.

Churches invited to list Easter services
The Richwood Gazette will be publishing a list of area churches who will be hosting Easter services. Included in the list will be services from Palm Sunday, March 29, through Easter Sunday, April 5.
