It’s just a box of toiletries. Paper towels. Laundry detergent. Toothpaste. About $20 worth of items you can’t get with food stamps. But it means the world to Peggy.

The Ohio State University’s Marion campus was the location of the Ohio VEX Robotics State Championship, where middle school and high school teams competed in the two-day event last weekend.

Grand Jury issues death penalty for Magana

The Union County Grand Jury has returned a death penalty indictment Monday against Joseph Magana, according to Union County Prosecuting Attorney David Phillips. Magana, 29, was indicted for aggravated murder with specifications, aggravated burglary with specifications, aggravated robbery with specifications, tampering with evidence, witness intimidation, grand theft of a firearm and receiving stolen property on Feb. 18 in connection with the murder of Arthur Burchett, who lived at 10500 Askins Road, near Magnetic Springs.

Council approves park request for distribution of free produce

Make plans for the Richwood-North Union alumni banquet

It is time to make plans for the 99th annual Richwood-North Union High School Alumni Banquet. This year’s event is on Saturday, June 13, and will be held at the North Union High School, 401 N. Franklin Street in Richwood. Doors open at 5 p.m. or come for the social hour from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Billiards for Books tournament rescheduled

Organizers have moved United Way’s Sixth Billiards for Books tournament to Saturday, April 11.  Players will rack ‘em at 1 p.m. at the Cue Stick Café in Marysville.  The competition was moved from its originally scheduled March 14 date to avoid a conflict with another local pool tournament.

Information presented at his arraignment hearing indicates that days after allegedly killing a Richwood man, an accused murderer threatened to kill again.

School board accepts Smith’s resignation

The North Union Board of Education accepted School Superintendent Rick Smith’s resignation at Monday night’s regular meeting. Smith has accepted a position as superintendent at Ohio Hi-Point, a career center in Logan County. Smith’s resignation is effective July 31, 2015.

Red Cross volunteers needed in Union County
The American Red Cross of Union County is hosting an open house this evening, March 18. The event will be held at the Plain City Fire Department, 650 W. Main Street in Plain City from 6 to 8 p.m.

Council discusses tap-in fees and street paving

Mayor Scott Jerew addressed council members at Monday night’s meeting about looking into the cost of sewer and water tap fees. He thought the village should consider looking at the costs of surrounding villages at their fees to determine an average cost. Councilman Von Beal was absent from the meeting.

For 38 years, volunteers have spent thousands of hours organizing the annual two-day festival known as “Springenfest.” This year, members of the North Union Athletic Committee (NUAC) have reorganized their thinking and came up with a new twist.

Matt and Connie Haller are starting the spring season off with a bang by recently purchasing Tom’s Dairy Bar at 371 E. Blagrove Street, east of Richwood. The deal was finalized March 6 when they bought the eatery from Tom and Annette Chapman.

Brumfield earns Eagle Scout rank
Ian Brumfield, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest recognition in the Boy Scouts of America on Feb. 12, 2015. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 440 and is the son of Brian and Kim Brumfield of Marysville. The Richwood First United Methodist Church sponsors Troop 440.
