Local Drug Take Back Day a success

Despite the rain and cold temperatures, residents kept deputies from the Sheriff’s Office busy with a steady stream of cars dropping off unused and unwanted drugs. Sheriff’s employees collected over 108 pounds of medication that was dropped off at the Union County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, April 25.

Community rabies clinics held

Union County veterinarians volunteer their time each spring to help protect our community from rabies by offering low cost rabies vaccination clinics. On Sunday, May 17, from 1 to 4 p.m., local dog and cat owners can once again stop by one of four Union County locations to get their pets vaccinated against rabies for only $9 a pet.

The National Day of Prayer is a part of our heritage since the first call to prayer in1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. The call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting and prayer” in 1863.

Man shares passion of theatre in his book

Scott Hoffman is a husband, father, attorney-at-law and his hobby is for the preservation of the Palace Theatre in Marion. He is a member and a past chairman of the board of directors of the Palace Cultural Arts Association. Currently, he is chairman of the fundraising committee who is raising funds for a two-phase renovation project.

Bloodmobile comes to Richwood

The Richwood First United Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton Street, will be the site for the May 18 American Red Cross Bloodmobile event. Donors are needed badly.

School board holds special meetings

The North Union Board of Education held special meetings last week, interviewing candidates for the school superintendent’s position. School Superintendent Rick Smith will retire from North Union Schools effective July 31, 2015. He will become the superintendent at Ohio-Hi Point Career Center in Logan County.

Fire hydrants to be flushed
Village employees will be flushing fire hydrants within the village on Tuesday, May 12.

NU FFA named Top Ten Chapter

The North Union FFA chapter was recently named one of ten chapters and named a top ten chapter in three different categories and only one of thirty to receive a gold emblem award in the Ohio FFA State Association.

The Ohio Auditor of State released the fiscal year 2012-13 financial audit for the Village of Richwood on Thursday, May 7.

Marion County Senior Citizen Day in Ohio was celebrated Monday, May 11, at the Marion Senior Center. Steve Badertscher, Director of the Center, welcomed everyone to the luncheon and festivities.

School board hires new superintendent

The North Union Board of Education approved the hiring of a new school superintendent at their Monday night meeting. Richard Baird was given a three-year contract to head the North Union School District. He spent 12 years in the Dublin City School District and begins his new position effective Aug. 1. A story about his credentials in education will appear in next week’s Richwood Gazette.

John Hoskins inducted into Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame

The 40th Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame will be inducting Richwood resident John A. Hoskins today. Hoskins and Marie M. Elsom, are the two Union County candidates receiving recognition. The event is held at the Martin Janis Center in Columbus.

Remember and Honor on Memorial Day

Monday, May 25, is the one day of the year when all Americans take time to remember and honor the men and women of the Armed Forces who gave their lives for our freedom and were lost in war or passed on during peacetime.

Office closed May 25, 2015
Because of  Memorial Day falling on Monday, the Richwood Gazette will be closed and the paper will be printed a day late. The business will resume normal office hours on Tuesday, May 26. Have a safe Memorial Day!

North Union graduates Class of 2015 
North Union High School gymnasium will be the scene for Friday evening’s graduation of 116 North Union graduating seniors. The newest alumni class will walk across the stage at 7 p.m.

Baird to lead North Union School District

With many years of education under his belt, Richard J. Baird will serve his first term as a superintendent of public schools. The North Union Board of Education hired Baird at their May 18 meeting to a three-year contract. His base salary for a superintendent will be $103,794.31.
Rich Baird, as he is called, is a resident of Marysville, with his wife Kristin, who is employed at Dr. Johnson’s office. They have four children and two grandchildren, of which Baird is very grateful for the support of his family.
Baird has spent the last nine years serving as a principal at the John Sells Middle School, of the Dublin City Schools. For four consecutive years, from 2007 through 2012, his school achieved “Excellent with Distinction” rating with the state.

Richwood Farmers Market opens Monday
Nothing tastes better than fresh, local produce. Come savor the flavor at the Monday, June 1 grand opening of the Union County Farmers Market-Richwood in the parking lot of the Richwood-North Union Public Library.
