As summer ends sober driving urged by local officials

“There is no excuse for drunk driving.”
That’s the message local law enforcement and health department officials want to send as summer comes to its unofficial end.

Holcomb to receive OSBA award

The North Union Board of Education recently nominated Barbara Holcomb for the Central Region Ohio School Board Association (OSBA) as a “Friend of Public Education.” At the last board meeting in August, they announced Holcomb was approved.

Use of force policy set for county

Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton says a set of newly approved standards for the use of deadly force will not change how his deputies conduct themselves.

Richwood Fair begins today

The 123rd annual running of the Richwood Independent Fair kicked off at 7 a.m. this morning. Fair board members and county officials welcome the public to enjoy six days of fun-filled events.

Village to flush fire hydrants
The village of Richwood will be flushing fire hydrants on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Office closed September 7
Because of Monday’s Labor Day holiday, the Richwood Gazette will be closed. The paper will be printed a day late. The business will resume normal office hours on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The Richwood First United Methodist Church will be hosting the next American Red Cross Bloodmobile on Monday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 7 p.m. They want to see you there.

The Union County Farmers Market will be in full swing, along with Festifair on Saturday, Sept. 12, in downtown Marysville.

The Union County Humane Society (UCHS) has a new executive director who’s planning big changes for the organization.

September is Safe Driving Awareness Month
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking motorists to commit to driving only when buckled, focused and sober. They want motorists to remember that in Ohio, this is Safe Driving Awareness Month.

Town Hall meeting on marijuana

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, has certified a private investor group “ResponsibleOhio,” who has collected enough signatures to qualify for asking Ohio voters to legalize marijuana on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Classified ad deadline to change
The Richwood Gazette is changing their deadline for classified ads.
Effective immediately, customers have until 10 a.m. every Monday morning to submit any classified ads only for the same week the Richwood Gazette is published.
Open display ad deadline will remain the same, every Friday by 12 noon. We hope this change will accommodate customer’s needs for classified advertising.

Heifer Festival helps fight hunger

The 11th Annual Heifer Festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at North Union Elementary, 420 Grove Street in Richwood this year. Plan to attend and enjoy a day of fun, games and entertainment.

Council to hold contest on village flag

The Richwood Village Council met Monday evening and a topic of flag etiquette was discussed. It seems that the only person who can call for a flag to be at half-staff is the President of the United States. Should a village employee or dignitary from the village pass away, the village flag can be flown at half-staff. So, Mayor Scott Jerew and council have decided to sponsor a contest to have someone design a flag for the village.

Enjoy a musical evening at Festival of Bands

The North Union Band Boosters are inviting the public to attend their annual Festival of Bands event on Saturday, Sept. 26. The fun will take place at North Union High School, 401 N. Franklin Street, Richwood, on the football field at 6 p.m.

Flu Shot Clinics Scheduled in Richwood

The Union County Health Department is offering three opportunities for flu vaccinations in the Richwood area this year. The Health Department will provide flu vaccines from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 24, Oct. 22 and Nov. 19. All vaccination clinics will be held at the Northern Union County Fire Department, 602 N. Franklin St, Richwood.

County engineers say “no” to Issue 3

“We hope voters will take a long look at all of the ramifications when they vote upon Issue 3 to legalize marijuana in Ohio,” said Fredrick Pausch, County Engineers Association of Ohio executive director. “Job number one of the county engineer, is to ensure the safety of the traveling public. We have way too many problems as it is with Ohioans driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Legalizing marijuana use will only make that worse. 

Council prepares to amend ordinances regarding H.B. 5

The Ohio General Assembly enacted House Bill 5 in December 2014, which mandates that “Municipalities shall have authority to exercise all powers of local self-government” and the municipal taxing power is one of such powers of local self-government delegated by the people of the state.

October is Fire Prevention Month

Staff from the Northern Union County Fire and EMS Department will host an open house on Sunday, Oct. 4 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the station, 602 N. Franklin Street, Richwood. Free hot dogs and drinks will be available. This year’s message is: “Hear the BEEP Where you SLEEP.” The department will be giving out smoke detectors to the first 25 families. There is a limit of one per family. They will be demonstrating their new cots.

RABA announces upcoming events

The Richwood Area Business Association (RABA) held their September business meeting at the Richwood-North Union Public Library.

The 2015 Blue Ribbon Review after fair paper will be inserted into the Richwood Gazette in the Oct. 7 edition. Due to some scheduling problems, the release of the paper was put back one week from the previously announced date of Sept. 30.
