Chamber honors county residents and organizations

Seventeen community leaders and organizations were recently honored for their service at a public luncheon hosted by the Union County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Memorial Health. The luncheon and award ceremony was held at Der Dutchman restaurant in Plain City.

Free recycling day for electronics and appliances

United Way of Union County received honors

United Way of Union County recently achieved the Gold GuideStar Nonprofit Profile level. GuideStar is the world’s largest source of information about nonprofit organizations and a leader in advancing transparency in the nonprofit sector. This level demonstrates United Way of Union County’s deep commitment to nonprofit transparency and accountability.

Students tour Switzerland and Italy

Students from North Union (NU) and Marysville High Schools (MHS) went on a 10-day educational tour to Switzerland and Italy. A total of 23 students, four chaperones and four adult travelers flew in to Zurich to start the educational travel south to Rome. All tours are done in English. Some of the students had never flown before or been out of the U.S.A. The first stop was Lucerne, where the students participated in a Swiss Folklore event, which exposed the students to the Swiss national dish of fondue, traditional foods, yodeling, dancing and Alpine horns.

Search produces guns and drugs

A citizen reported to the Union County Sheriff’s Office  a resident in Leesburg Township was in possession of drugs and firearms. On April 7, 2016, members of the Union County Multi-Agency Drug Enforcement (MADE) Task Force and the Union County Adult Parole Authority officers searched a residence in the 12000 block of Morey Courtright Road.

Richwood Mayor Scott Jerew informed council members at Monday night’s meeting, that State Representative Dorothy Pelanda called him prior to the meeting with some promising news.

North Union Middle School Principal Matt Burggraf showed the board members the extra programs and things they have in place to help students with low level reading skills, at Monday night’s regular board of education meeting. The board took of a tour of the middle school, prior to the meeting.

Turning over a New Leaf

The Mental Health and Recovery Board of Union County is inviting the public to a new program called, “The New Leaf.” The purpose of the New Leaf program is to provide easy access to local resources in the one-stop, central location.

Jurors drawn for May term

The following jurors have been drawn for the May 2016 term of the Court of Common Pleas, and will be subject to jury duty through Aug. 31, 2016. You will be notified in person or by letter when to report for jury duty. Please do not be concerned until notified, as additional juror names have been drawn and will be called on an “as needed” basis. Therefore, your jury service may or may not be required.

Group to host drug “Take Back”

The Union County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Richwood Police, Plain City Police, Memorial Hospital, and the Union County Drug Free Coalition, are sponsoring a prescription drug “Take-Back” event on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations.

United Way recognizes supporters

United Way of Union County recently celebrated another successful campaign in raising funds for residents of Union County. Over 115 United Way Workplace Champions were saluted for helping raise over $960,000 for the community. Funds raised help support 26 Partner Agencies and 40 programs that United Way funds, including six area pantries, two shelters, four senior centers, an after-school youth center, a homeless prevention program, rent and utility assistance, disaster relief, prescription medication, hospice care, cancer support, youth activities and more.

National Day of Prayer set
In 1775, the Continental Congress allocated a time for prayer in forming a new nation. On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.
