COFP buys Prospect Farmers Exchange

Central Ohio Farmers Cooperative (COFC), a full service cooperative founded in 1934 and based in Marion, Ohio, has reached an agreement to purchase Prospect Farmers Exchange in Prospect, Ohio.

More updates for village to begin in spring

The Village of Richwood will be getting another update in infrastructure, beginning late spring. Bids for the project will be available sometime in April. The project, called the “E. Ottawa Street Project,” will include new water and sewer lines, new curbs, sidewalks, catch basins and asphalt will begin near the intersection of N. Franklin and E. Ottawa Streets to School Street. If there is extra money available, E. Ottawa will get repaved to the village corporation limits or as far as the money will take it.

A Union County woman has filed a lawsuit against the Union County Health Department.

Police recount 2015 activity

The Richwood Police Department has released their report of calls for the 2015 year. There were 8,729 calls, down from the 9,815 calls from 2014 reports. The breakdown averages 23.92 calls per day at the local police station.

Richwood polling place relocates

The Union County Board of Elections recently mailed a letter to Richwood registered voters, notifying them of a change of address. Voters will no longer go to the secretary’s building at the Richwood Fairgrounds to cast their votes during elections.

Amstutz wins national sheep show

North Union fifth grade student Bailee Amstutz continues to add to her resume` of showing and raising sheep. For an eleven-year-old, she’s accomplished quite a bit in a short time.

NU robotics teams continue to win

The North Union Middle School Robotics students participated Thursday, at RAMTEC Tri-Rivers during the VEX Robotics competition in a double-header. The first competition was for middle school teams. Twenty-nine teams from around Ohio, including seven North Union teams, competed. After the preliminary qualifying rounds, NUMS had four teams in the top ten, including the first and second place spots. Three NU teams joined forces for the final tournament and ended up winning the entire tournament. The winning alliance of teams #4810D “IDK”-Jake Willis, Eli Mishler, Dawson Kiess and Casey Rensel, #4810A “RoboCatz”-Avery Zwayer, Gage Zwayer, Lucien Hendrickson and Jared Smith, and #4810J “The Boyz”-Tyler Cox, Ronnie Schilling and Devan Vanderpool brought home honors.

Council learns of new homes to be built

Richwood village council members learned from Mayor Scott Jerew at Monday night’s meeting, that three permits were approved for the building of three new homes in Richwood.

Elementary teacher under investigation

North Union Elementary parents received a letter from North Union School Superintendent,  Richard Baird Wednesday, Feb. 3 regarding Spencer Aldridge, a fourth grade teacher at North Union Elementary. Baird said that the investigation has been turned over to the Richwood Police Department and the Ohio Department of Education.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine released the top categories of complaints filed with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section in 2015, when more than 27,000 complaints were recorded.

First Zika virus case reported in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Health is reporting Ohio’s that four cases of Zika virus in returning travelers from other countries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was reporting 52 cases of Zika virus in 16 states and the District of Columbia prior to Ohio’s cases.

North Union Robotics continue to win

Middle school teams traveled to Cleveland State University last Friday for a middle school VEX Robotics tournament. It was a successful trip, as three North Union teams 4810a (Avery Zwayer, Gage Zwayer, Jared Smith and Lucien Hendrickson), 4810d (Eli Mishler, Jake Willis, Dawson Kiess and Casey Rensel) and 4810b (Mack Plotner, Nathan Matlack, Evan Hoffer, Kinlee Craig and Averi Snider) formed an alliance and played through the elimination matches for the big win and tournament champion title. In addition to the tournament title, North Union teams brought home more hardware in the judged awards.  Team 4810a won the Excellence Award and team 4810g (Derek Ballinger, Connor Brandt and Garrett Frasca) won the Design Award. All of the awards given out were for qualifying spots to the state championship, but all of the winning NU teams have already qualified at prior events. NUMS will have six VEX teams that will compete in the middle school division of the Ohio VEX State Championship, which is scheduled for Friday, March 4, at Marion Harding High School.

NU FFA celebrates National FFA Week

The bright yellow emblem placed on the blue corduroy jacket is a time-honored emblem that is easily recognized. The FFA emblem represents over 75 years of agricultural education, career development and premier leadership.

Sometimes in life, things happen for no reason and you try to understand why things are happening the way they are. Tracy Carlyle is following his heart and the messages that he’s been getting. No one can say that making a change in your life is easy, and this change is definitely one of those times for Tracy and his family and for Richwood.

Council to help with request for grant funds

Doug Matthews, of the Union County Health Department, approached village council members at Monday night’s regular meeting for support on seeking grant money. Matthews is applying for grant money from the Safe Routes to School Projects through the State of Ohio and the Department of Transportation.

Board hears about career tech education

North Union High School principals Eric Holman and Diana Martin gave a presentation to the school board on Career Tech Education at Monday night’s school board meeting.
