Looking back at the highs and lows of 2016

Richwood saw several changes during the 2016 year. Listed below are some of the highlights that took place.

Two indicted by grand jury

A Union County grand jury has indicted two women for allegedly stealing from the state of Ohio.

Start the new year off by donating blood

Start your new year off right by being a blood donor. Come to the Richwood First United Methodist Church, 18 S. Fulton Street in Richwood on Monday, Jan. 16, from 1 to 7 p.m. and give the gift of life.

Bedbugs a constant threat for Memorial facilities

For most people, the idea of bed bugs is a traumatic one that makes their skin crawl. For officials at Union County’s Memorial Health System, it is routine business.

Council organizes for 2017

Members of Richwood Village Council held their organizational meeting Monday night, and the first order of business was to appoint a president of council. Members voted unanimously for Jack Moore as the president.


Crosthwaite elected president of North Union Board of Education

The North Union Board of Education held their organizational meeting for the 2017 year and re-elected Kevin Crosthwaite as president of the board and Dennis Hall was re-elected as vice president.


Health Department promotes radon awareness

As Union County residents spend more time indoors during the winter season, the Health Department wants to remind people to be aware of the silent killer that could be building up at home: radon.


Fire and EMS stats reported for 2016

The Northern Union County Fire and EMS District has released statistics for the 2016 calendar year. The total calls of service were 755, up from 2015, when they handled 744 calls.


Nominations for senior citizens wanted 
The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA) is seeking nominations for the Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Celebrating active and ageless lifestyles, COAAA inducts ten to twelve older central Ohioans into the Hall of Fame during Older Americans Month each year. The next annual recognition ceremony and reception will be held on Wed., May 17, in Columbus.


Activity for police department in 2016

The Richwood Police Department has released activity they handled in the year 2016. They handled 8,285 calls for service. These calls range from well-being checks, traffic stops, to suicide attempts.

Goodwin earns Eagle Scout Award
Lincoln Goodwin, son of Tim and Kristy Goodwin, recently was inducted during a Court of Honor, as a new Eagle Scout last December. The event was held at the Richland Road Church of Christ in Marion.

Campus tour at Tri-Rivers for home-schooled students

Tri-Rivers invites home schooled students and their families to a Career Exploration Campus Tour event Thursday, Jan. 19. There will be two sessions that day—a morning session from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and an afternoon session from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Each session will begin in the career center’s auditorium.


Free tax help available in Union County
Community Action Organization, in partnership with the IRS, will be offering volunteer tax preparation services in Union County at multiple locations. Tax certified volunteers will prepare federal and state tax returns for people with household incomes of $58,000 or less. All returns are electronically filed and direct deposit is available.


E. Ottawa Street project to begin

Village Administrator Monte Asher met with officials to discuss the upcoming project on E. Ottawa Street. The section of E. Ottawa Street that will be improved is from Franklin Street to approximately Norris Street. This area will receive new storm drainage lines, new sewer and water lines, street, curbs and sidewalks. This project is made possible through grant monies designated for the project.


Council discusses smoking ban at park

Mayor Scott Jerew has had requests from parents and coaches regarding a ban from smoking at Richwood Park. He asked council for their opinions. The biggest concern was the problem of enforcing a ban and if it is not enforced, why make more rules.
