NUMS hosts Ohio VEX IQ State

For the second year in a row, North Union Middle School was the site of the 2017 Ohio VEX IQ State Championship, which took place this past weekend and hosted teams from all over Ohio.

Hospitals are designed to help people in times of distress, but Memorial Health has broadened that idea to meet the needs of a pair of area communities.

Council discusses making park smoke-free

Doug Matthews, from the Union County Health Department, addressed council members during Monday night’s meeting. He spoke with council members about the dangers of smoking, outdoor exposure to secondhand smoke and tobacco-free polices promote healthy communities.


Bomb threat reported at NUHS

Dismissing students at the end of a school day is confusing enough. School officials also had to deal with a suspected bomb threat at the same time.


Police K9 to get body armor

Richwood Police Department’s K9, Klink, will receive a bullet and stab protective vest, thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Klink’s vest is sponsored by the 2016 Fallen K9 Hero fundraiser hosted by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of the K9s who served and sacrificed in 2016.” Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

NU robotics teams prepare for state championship

The North Union Robotics Teams have had another busy and successful season. After starting their competition season back in October, the middle school and high school VEX Robotics teams have each competed in 10 qualifying regular season events, and after earning multiple awards throughout the season, are now preparing to compete in the upcoming Ohio VEX Robotics State Championship.


NU robotics headed to World Competition

Marion Harding High School was the location of the 2017 Ohio VEX Robotics State Championship. The best teams from all over Ohio converged over the weekend for the three-day event to claim the state title and qualify for a chance to advance and compete at the VEX World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky in April.


Council needs residents to serve on committees

Richwood village council members met Monday night and discussed setting up a Planning Commission and a Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA).

United Way of Union County earns 4-star rating

United Way of Union County’s strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency has earned it a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. The organization has moved to this top distinction from a three-star rating the previous year.


North Union graduate’s work on display

NU School board honors staff member

The North Union Board of Education held their monthly meeting Monday evening at the Tri-Rivers Career Center in Marion. They are invited yearly to the educational center to tour the facilities where some of the North Union juniors and seniors attend classes. Board member Dennis Hall was absent from the meeting.


Churches invited to share special Easter services
Easter Sunday is April 16, and The Richwood Gazette will publish special events for the public from local area churches.


Donors reminded of blood drive

The American Red Cross will be taking blood and plasma donations Monday, March 27 at the First United Methodist Church, at 18 S. Fulton Street in Richwood. The event will be held from 1 to 7 p.m.


Celebrate the 125th Richwood Independent Fair

The Richwood Independent Fair board is making plans for their 125th annual fair, Aug.30 through Labor Day, Sept. 4. There are a few new announcements they want the public to know.


Kapraly joins new family practice

Memorial Family Medicine in Richwood will open in late May, with two physicians who are well known to area patients. Pamela Kapraly, MD, will join David Dunkin, DO at this new, renovated office at 19 W. Ottawa Street. Dr. Kapraly is continuing to see patients in her current office, and will have appointments at the new location starting on May 30. She has operated an independent practice in Richwood since 1992.

Council learns more about land banks

Richwood village council had invited Andrew Smarra, Union County’s treasurer to attend the Monday night meeting and to educate council members on a county land bank.


Town meetings to discuss sewage rules

The Union County Health Department wants to invite residents of Union County to attending town meetings held throughout the county. The reason is to understand the sewage rules and septic permit regulations in Ohio.


It’s time to “clean up”
The Leesburg Township Trustees are inviting the residents of the township to get ready to do their “spring cleaning.”
