When dog owners purchase their dog licenses for 2018, they will find the tag a bit more expensive.

Leaders frustrated over sales tax solution

The Union County Commissioners are expressing frustration with a plan they say will cost the county nearly half a million dollars annually.

Medicare open enrollment coming
The open enrollment for Medicare 2018, will take place Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. During this time, you may wish to switch, add, or drop Medicare Part D Plans (prescription drug coverage), Advantage plans or go back to the original Medicare (Part A, B and D). It’s important that you understand your options. During the month of September, you should have received your 2018
Medicare and You handbook and information about any changes in coverage for 2018.

Electronic recycling event set

Clean off your desk and your shed to dispose of those unwanted, unused, broken computers, key boards and mice, cable and wire, cameras, servers, VCRs, monitors, cell phones, battery backup
systems, scanners, printers, fax machines, copiers, CD and DVD media, floppy disks, stereo equipment, video games, phone equipment, microwaves, sweepers and other household electronics. Mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain or shine).

Combine fires becoming a problem in 2017 harvest

With record heat at the end of September and unusually dry conditions, risk for fires in combines is increased this harvest season. On this morning’s CORN call, the National Weather Service Representative indicated this very dry trend to continue with exception to the middle of October. Three combine fires were reported in Ohio between the dates of September 22nd and September 28th.

Brush pick-up deadline near
Village Administrator Monte Asher has announced that the village employees will be preparing equipment for the winter season, so that last date of picking up small piles of brush and limbs will be on Monday, Oct. 30. Crews will continue to pick-up curbside the small piles of brush until that date. It is asked that no garbage or other items be included in the piles that might break the equipment.

Tri-County Jail seeks continuous medical coverage

Officials at the Tri- County Regional Jail are working to provide around the clock medical care for inmates. Jail Executive Director Scott Springhetti said generally the jail has a nurse on duty 12 hours a day.

Commercial building codes updated
The new 2017 Ohio Building, Mechanical and Plumbing Codes and their referenced standards will take effect on Nov. 1, 2017. These new codes are based on 2015 ICC codes and replace the current 2011 Ohio Building, Mechanical, and Plumbing Codes that are based on the 2009 ICC codes.

Board hears technology report

The North Union Board of Education heard a report on the use of technology at their Monday night meeting. Board members Kevin Crosthwaite and Dennis Hall were absent. Vice president Jean Wedding presided over the meeting.

Veterans to be honored
The North Union Elementary School students are preparing for their tribute to community heroes during their annual Veterans Day celebration.

NUniversity offers free programs

Council approves abatement

The first order of business at the Monday night council meeting was to swear in a new police officer. Mayor Scott Jerew swore in officer Sebastian Walker as a full-time officer of the Richwood
Police Department. Walker is a 2013 Harding High School graduate and graduated this year in law enforcement from the Marion Technical College this past June. This is his first commission as a police officer.

Trick or Treat events set
It’s that time of year when ghosts, goblins and all types of creatures roam the village streets for Trick or Treat. Listed below are events are scheduled at the end of the month.
