From farming to composting; training for new job opportunities

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections has a new operation at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution – a new composting facility.
Bob Nauman, a 1981 North Union graduation, who lives on Jackson Road near Magnetic Springs, is the business administrator at the Allen Oakwood facility. When the farming program was closed at all Ohio prisons last year, he began researching and planning for the composting project. Last Wednesday, Gary Mohr, director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, presented Nauman with his agency’s Director’s Impact Award.

Hansley named Union County adminstrator

Tim Hansley has accepted the position as administrator for Union County.
Hansley was named interim director in September, replacing Eric Richter who left to become township administrator in Washington Township, Franklin County. Monday, the Union County Commissioners removed the interim label and named him the permanent replacement.

Tri-Rivers Career Center - School of nursing ranked best in Ohio

For the second year in a row, Tri-Rivers School of Nursing LPN to RN program has been ranked as the Best in Ohio by RegisteredNursing.org, according to a news release from the group.
Nursing programs were assessed on several factors, which represent how well a program supports students toward licensure and beyond, according to Sally Worthington of RegisteredNursing.org  “We analyzed past and present first time NCLEX-RN passage rates—weighted by year.”

Moore leaves library, Deel continues as interim director

Sarah Moore came to Richwood seven and a half years ago to become the Director of the Richwood-North Union Public Library. During her tenure, she has brought technology and updates to the library that has helped the public in many ways.

Union County residents file to run for Ohio House seat

There will be a contested local race in May for the statehouse and several contested races are setting up for the November election.

School board tours Tri-Rivers Career Center

The regular meeting of the North Union Board of Education traveled to Marion to tour the Tri-River Career Center.Many North Union students attend Tri-Rivers to work towards a career or job.The board is invited yearly to see the facilities. Board member Jean Wedding was absent from the meeting.

Understanding pediatric cancer
The Union County Health Department is hosting a community forum on pediatric cancer.
The March 1, forum will examine the differences between childhood and adult cancers while also taking a closer look at cancer in our community. Speakers will present the latest research about the incidences  and causes of common pediatric cancers.

Student plans to help future green initiatives

The public has talked for years about sustaining our planet, to have a plan in place on the importance of recycling, planting trees and perennials, and being more earth-friendly.
Emily Howald, a senior at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, is a student in the environmental studies and zoology double major from Bucyrus, Ohio.

What do 235 North Union high school students have in common? They are part of the largest youth organization in the Unites States; The National FFA.

Memorial Hospital renovation underway
The Memorial 2020 is a $50 million major renovation and expansion project featuring new inpatient and outpatient pavilions on the hospital’s main campus. The project investment will be met through a combination of cash, bonds, and $4 million in charitable contributions. No tax dollars will be used. To date, over $3.2 million has been raised.

Council reviews results from recent trash survey

Richwood village residents received a mailing in January asking questions regarding trash pick-up service in the village. Village Council members have been discussing the pros and cons of having one company pick up trash on one day a week, versus continuing the practice of several companies coming into the village several days a week.

Village council approves first readings on finances

The Richwood Village council met Monday evening with Don Ridgeway, councilman, absent from the meeting. Two ordinances were submitted the first readings.
