West Nile Virus confirmed in Marysville

The Union County Health Department is advising residents that mosquitoes sampled from a Marysville trapping site have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Union County now joins 54 other Ohio counties reporting West Nile Virus activity.

Man with ax causes standoff at Honda

Law enforcement officials say they are pleased with the peaceful resolution of what they are calling, “a very tense situation for a couple of hours that could have ended not so well.”
Max W. Arnold, 30, of 628 Kenny Lane, Marysville, was arrested Friday evening. Law enforcement officials say he will be charged with inducing panic.

Richwood man charged in fatal crash

A Richwood driver has been charged following a crash that killed an area teen.
Christopher Conrad, 19, of 24660 state Route 4, Richwood, has been indicted by the Union County Grand Jury, charged with one count each of aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Magnetic Springs to receive $500,000 in grant money

Magnetic Springs is getting half a million dollars to help revitalize the village.
County and village officials recently learned that Magnetic Springs had been awarded $500,000 as part of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Neighborhood Revitalization Grant.

Teacher honored at school board meeting

The North Union Board of Education witnessed the presentation of the September NUPride Award given to Lisa McKinley. McKinley has been in education teaching for 38 years. She is an intervention specialist at North Union Middle School. One of her greatest desires is to see that students get all the help they can in learning to read. She has tutored during the summer and is a mentor to another intervention specialist in the district.

NU school may become new poling station

A bill in the Ohio Senate would put an emphasis on using public schools as poling places whenever possible.

Heifer Festival comes to Richwood

Heifer International is an organization that is trying to end hunger in the world. For more than 70 years, the group has partnered and helped communities in 25 countries in educating people to be able to sustain their livelihoods throughout their communities. The group has provided over 32 million families with the tools and training needed to lift themselves from poverty, while over one billion people still live in poverty around the world.

Hospital expands volunteer program

Memorial Hospital recently added a new volunteer role to its campus-wide Volunteer Program – volunteers will offer rides in Memorial golf carts and provide way-finding assistance to patients and guests as they visit the hospital.

State school report cards released

The school district report cards are in, and like every year, superintendents are adjusting to the changes.
New this year is the overall district grades. The Marysville, Fairbanks, North Union and Jonathan Alder school districts received ‘B’ grades, while Triad received a ‘C’ grade. According to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), “approximately 40 percent of schools received a ‘B’ or higher,” which left superintendents happy about scoring well, compared to other districts in the state.

Village receives half a million dollar grant

Mayor Scott Jerew told Richwood Village council members at Monday night’s meeting, that the village has received a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The grant money will be used for the upcoming Downtown Revitalization Project.

Health Department hosts flu clinics

Flu shots for the whole family are available by appointment at the Union County Health Department. Please call (937) 642-2053 today to make an appointment. No one is turned away for inability to pay. Most insurances including Medicaid plans such as CareSource and Molina are accepted.

Upcoming plans for Veterans Day and Voices from the Stone Program

The annual Veterans Day and “Voice from the Stone” program to be held at the Veterans Plaza on the Union County Courthouse lawn on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. (standard time) on the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I. The honoree for this 11th year will be the Private Ralph C. Ewing, who was killed in action on his 20th birthday, October 27, 1918 in France.
