Public library use on the rise

The Richwood-North Union Public Library has been a hub of activity for the public in 2018.  The staff noted that 3,321 people attended events or used the library during the year. That is a 44 percent rise from 2017. This includes 1,659 children, 653 teens and 1,009 adults who visited the library.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

One in three teens will be in an unhealthy relationship by the time they graduate high school, with close to 1.5 million high school students across the nation having experienced physical abuse in a relationship.

Annual Memorial Health women’s event set

For the tenth straight year, area women of all ages will gather at the Memorial Health Women’s Event. Attendees will enjoy food and fellowship as well as informative health topics and plenty of laughs on Friday, March 15.

Task force raids Richwood home

A man investigators believe was selling drugs in Richwood is behind bars.
Timothy Island, 38, of 107 Forest Lane, Richwood, was arrested Friday, charged with a probation violation.
Island was arrested after detectives from the Multi-Agency Drug Enforcement Task Force, deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Richwood Police Department and the Marysville Police Department’s Special Response Team served a search warrant at his home.

Council looks at tax incentives

Mayor Scott Jerew informed council about a meeting he attended regarding improvements for village residences and businesses.
Council is always trying to find ways for residents to make improvements on their properties and for businesses to make updates, without causing financial hardship in the process.They are always looking to encourage development and new construction. One such program is supported by the Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and the Union County Chamber of Commerce. This program is called the “Community Reinvestment Area (CRA).

Health department creates new strategic plan

The Union County Health Department (UCHD) now has a better perspective on where to take the agency in the next three years.
UCHD officials attended a special meeting this week, hosted by Mighty Crow Media, LLC, to learn how to better prioritize and conceptualize the department’s goals and objectives for the near future. UCHD Public Information Officer Jennifer Thrush said the company helped the department realize its objectives.

Accountant retires after 60 years of service to area

Jesse L. Conrad, CPA, has turned off his calculator December 31, 2018 at the office after 60 years of service at Conrad, Leibold and Woerner & Co.
Conrad was born and raised in Magnetic Springs, Ohio, and is a local historian of the small village. His grandfather, Jesse F. Conrad and Dr. Jesse M. Conrad were very supportive residents of the village and Jesse L. continues that family tradition.

Celebrate National FFA Week

The Future Farmers of America (FFA) began as a statewide group for vocational agriculture students was started in Virginia in 1917. By 1927, H. O. Sargent, a federal agent for agricultural education for African-Americans and G. W. Owens, a teacher-trainer at Virginia State College, wrote the first constitution and bylaws for the “New Farmers of Virginia.” Their constitution and bylaws helped form the constitution and bylaws of the FFA.

BIA says area needs more homes

Homeowners can challenge property valuation
Editor’s note: The following information comes from the office of the Union County Auditor.

State-wide, property owners have until March 31 to file an appeal contesting their real property value for tax year 2018.
Note that there are several ways to file: property owners can mail their complaint form and evidence of value, as well as fax and email. But the appeal filing period ends on March 31. At that time, completed complaint forms must be inside the Union County Auditor’s Office.

Council approves pay raise for employees

Richwood Village Council met in regular session Monday evening and after an executive session, they approved a three percent pay increase. Council approved the first reading Monday and if the pay increase is approved all three readings, pay increase for employees will be as follows:

Board announces a required “school day”

The North Union Board of Education was invited to tour Tri-Rivers Career Center in Marion for the Monday evening regular board meeting. A tour of the facility was taken previous to the 6:30 p.m. meeting.

Richardson to hold “Marysville First Fridays”

State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) announced that she will be holding in-district meetings beginning on Friday, March 1st. These “Marysville First Friday” meetings will be held monthly on the first Friday of every month. These meetings are a great way for constituents to have their voice heard and to meet their State Representative.
