Fifth grade students at North Union Elementary planted 20 Swamp White Oak
trees at Richwood Park last Friday in honor of National Arbor Day and
Earth Day. The Trailblazers group, who helped spearhead the project of the
walking path and other additions to the lake, purchased the trees from
Riverside Native Trees. What is unique about these trees is how they
became trees.
Hall of Fame welcomes veteran nominations

The Ohio Veterans Service is reminding the deadline for submitting
nominations for the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is just weeks away and they
want to hear from those who know former service members who are excelling
and making a difference in society.
Rough summer ahead for Route 4 drivers

Road closures are coming to Route 4.
Starting this week, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will
close portions of Route 4 north of Marysville that will affect traffic
until the end of May.
National Day of Prayer set for May 2

The annual National Day of Prayer will be held Thursday, May 2 all over
the United States. The theme, “Love One Another,” is based upon the words
of Jesus in John 13:34, which says, “Love one another. Just as I have
loved you.”

Richwood Police dog sent off with honors

Col. Klink liked to work. Many times, when his handler, K-9 Officer Eric
Nicholson would look for the dog, he would be inside the police cruiser,
ready to go.
“He was always ready to go work. That was his cruiser and he would even
sleep in it a lot of times,” said Richwood Police Chief Monte Asher.
Asher said Klink was, “a tracker, a very good tracker, a good drug dog,
just a good all-around dog.”

North Union competes in VEX Robotics World
Championship

Twenty-two students of North Union’s Robotics teams were part of the
world’s future innovators, problem solvers and engineers who convened in
Louisville, Kentucky recently as part of the world’s largest robotics
event: The Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation’s 12th
annual VEX Robotics World Championship, presented by the Northrop Grumman
Foundation. The REC Foundation’s VEX Robotics World Championship is a
week-long event, held April 24 – 30 at the Kentucky Exposition Center and
attended by over 30,000 people. This event celebrated hands-on STEM
learning with the world’s top teams, who gathered to compete in robotics
competitions focused on creative design and problem-solving.
Council announces new council member;works on
completion of Dudley Circle

After the opening of Monday night’s village council meeting, Reddy Brown,
council president, announced that the vacated seat of Jack Moore has been
filled. Following four applicant’s interviews, council appointed Von Beal
to fill out Moore’s council term, which expires Dec. 31, 2021. Beal is no
stranger to the position as he has held a seat on council for several
years. He will be sworn in at the May 28 meeting. The meeting date was
changed due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 27, the usual date
for council.
Summer lunch program announced

The school year is nearly over so that means that the summer lunch program
will soon begin.
The North Union Schools will be handling the meals this year with a twist.
The need for blood donors never takes a vacation

During the summer months, the need for blood donations is critical. More
people are traveling on roadways, vacations, etc. More accidents also seem
to take place then. People are diagnosed with many diseases and the need
for blood and platelet donations never stops.
Make plans for Memorial Day

Monday, May 27, is the designated day to remember and honor the men and
women of the Armed Forces who gave their lives for our freedoms in war or
peacetime.
The Richwood VFW Post 870, American Legion Post 40 and all local veterans
proudly pay tribute to fellow deceased comrades-in-arms. We invite all
community veterans to participate in, and the public to witness, military
services throughout the North Union area. At each service, a
military rifle detail will provide a gun salute and TAPS will be played.
School Board hears of celebrations and
end-of-school year events

Celebrations was the theme at the Monday night regular North Union School
Board meeting.
North Union Elementary Principal Darlene Allison hosted a tour of the
elementary facilities prior to the board meeting. She and Jessica Lanka,
NUE guidance counselor for grades three, four and five, informed the board
of a program called Social Emotional Learning. North Union was one of five
school districts that were selected to participate with the State Support
Team.
Local farmers market to open

The Richwood Farmers Market opens Thursday, May 23, and runs from 3:30 to
6:30 p.m. each Thursday through October. The Market will be along N.
Franklin Street, in front of the Richwood-North Union Library, 4 E. Ottawa
St. The market will feature fresh, Ohio-grown produce, dairy and meats,
baked goods, artisan goods, and more. Each week the market will feature
different activities and events, such as live music, activities for kids,
and cooking demonstrations.
