Robotics teams headed to world competition

Earlier this month, the North Union Robotics teams traveled to Sandusky, OH to compete in the Signature Event, the Kalahari Classic. REC Foundation Signature Events are special competitions that meet a variety of requirements in order to give teams the opportunity to play at a tournament that is of the highest caliber.

Local schools deal with flu concerns

School districts around the state are closing, at least temporarily, a result of the flu.
While local districts have not closed, they have been keeping an eye on flu activity.

Agencies combine forces to battle mental health issues in the county

Union County agencies are teaming up to explore how local mental health services can be improved.
Members of the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) committee met Thursday to discuss strategies to address mental health concerns within the community.
According to the Union County Health Department (UCHD), the CHIP is a data-informed, strategic health plan.

Council hears from upcoming area candidates

The Primary Election will be held March 17 and Richwood village council is getting a front row seat to meet some of the candidates seeking your vote.
During Monday night’s regular council, three upcoming candidates introduced themselves to council and those in attendance. Those who introduced themselves were Rod Goddard (running for county commissioner), Kim Zacharias (running for county commissioner) and Sal Petrovia (running for county recorder).

Three arrested in theft ring

Suspects in an alleged stolen vehicle ring were taken into custody last week after a search warrant was served at a home in Washington Township.
Detectives from the Multi-Agency Drug Enforcement (MADE) Task Force, the Special Response Teams from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Marysville Police Division, as well as other officers, took three individuals into custody after searching the home at 19275 Route 739.

County receives new 326 area code

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) is reminding area residents and businesses that they will need to change the way the dial the phone.
Residents and businesses in the (937) area code will need to dial local calls, using the 10 or 11-digit telephone number - area code plus the seven-digit telephone number or 1, plus the area code and seven-digit telephone number. The area code will be mandatory for all local calls made within the Ohio (937) area code.

Jurors named for grand, petit jury duty

The Union County Clerk of Courts has released the names of jurors from the northern part of Union County, drawn for the March and April 2020 term for Petit Jury and the January through April term of Grand Jury.
You will be notified in person or by letter when to report for jury duty. Do not be concerned until you have been notified, as additional juror names have been drawn and will be called on an “as needed” basis. Therefore, your jury service may or may not be needed.

Primary election voting explained

As local election officials prepare for next month’s presidential primary, they want to make sure voters are ready as well.
Brandon Clay and Tina LaRoche, director and deputy director of the Union County Board of Elections, each said they get frequent questions about all elections, but especially primary elections. This year’s primary election will be held March 17, 2020.

School Board authorizes funds for athletic field house

The North Union Board of Education met Monday for their regular board meeting. On the agenda was approving funds for the new athletic field house.

Ohio weekly flu hospitalizations continue to rise to new high

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reports that the number of new influenza- related hospitalizations rose again last week. The 994 hospitalizations from February 2 to February 8 marks a new high for the 2019-2020 flu season and a 19% increase over the previous week.

United Way releases support for local community

The United Way of Union County (UWUC) has announced their funding for county organizations for fiscal year 2020.
The UWUC’s Board of Trustees have announced the 25 partner agencies that meet the organization’s mission to provide economic stability, access to healthcare, promote youth success and senior engagement.

Help celebrate National FFA Week

Today, the National FFA organization reaches out to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. FFA is committed to developing character and leadership skills, as well as preparing members for a lifetime of civic leadership and career success. One of the ways FFA connects with its many members is through the National FFA Week.

Council wants public opinion on opera house

Mayor Scott Jerew told council members at Monday night’s meeting, we need to decide what we want to do with the former town hall/opera house before the decision is made for us.

Garden club gets set for spring planting

The Progressive Buds Garden Club, affiliated with the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, meets 10 months out of the year from October through September (resting in January and February). Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at the Richwood-North Union Public Library, 4 E. Ottawa Street in Richwood at 7 p.m.

Health Department’s update on flu and coronavirus

Although there are no significant changes in alerts for the local community, the Union County Health Department (UCHD) is continuing to update residents regarding the coronavirus.
