A Michigan man at the center of an alleged ring to scam banks has been indicted.

While next year’s presidential election will get a lot of attention, there are a handful of local elections of not for 2020.
Wednesday, Dec. 18, was the deadline for local candidates to file for the March 17, 2020, primary election.

Local business robbed at gunpoint

According to the Richwood Police Department, Monday at approximately 4:15 a.m. officers were called to the Richwood Mini Mart/Marathon gas station, 3 E. Bomford St. on a report of an armed robbery.
The suspect was identified as a male, unknown race, is approximately six feet in height, was wearing blue coveralls and a black mask and gloves.

Union County revenue increases by more than $1M

For the first time, Union County General Fund revenue topped $25 million in 2019.

Ohio property owners have until March 31, 2020, to file an appeal contesting their real property value for tax year 2019.

American Red Cross needs you

During the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, about 500 fewer blood drives were hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than what is required to meet patient needs. Many groups postpone blood drives during the winter holidays when travel and holiday activities may make it challenging for many donors to give. In fact, AAA estimated that a record 115.6 million Americans traveled during the holiday period of Dec. 21 through Jan. 1.

The Richwood Independent Fair board of directors recently attended the Ohio Fair Managers Association on January 3 and the Ohio Department of Agriculture recognized all individuals nominated for outstanding service to their respective fairs.

Village council discusses upcoming projects for 2020

Council members  talked about upcoming projects for the new year at Monday night’s regular meeting. Their first order of business was to elect a council president. Reddy Brown was voted in as president.

Two more robotics teams qualify for state competition

North Union High School took four VEX Robotics teams to compete at Pickerington High School Central last weekend in another regular-season qualifying event. Qualification matches started out a little rocky, and some of our teams struggled with some mechanical issues on their robots, but they sure did finish strong in the elimination tournament!

Fire department summary shows a busy year

Fire Chief Randy Riffle has released the summary of calls for the year 2019. There were a total of 820 total calls, compared to 756 calls in 2018. The Northern Union County Fire and EMS District (NUCFD) also assisted other local area departments, handled fire calls, EMS, motor vehicle accidents, CO checks, false alarms, canceled enroute, service runs, 911 and hazardous material calls.

School Board organizes for 2020, fill vacant seat

The first order of business was to swear in Bradley M. DeCamp who is filling the vacated seat of school board member, Bill Davenport, who resigned Dec. 31, 2019. DeCamp, Shelly Ehret and Matt Staley took the oath of office during the Tuesday, Jan. 14 North Union School Board meeting.

Union County auditor opens books online

The Union County Auditor’s Office is working to create fiscal transparency.
Recently, County Auditor Andrea Weaver opened the Union County Open Finance webpage.
She said the site is “part of our commitment to improving transparency by providing a guided view through complex financial information.”

Richwood man charged with attacking brother

A Richwood man with two prior domestic violence conviction charges has been indicted for allegedly attacking his brother.
The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Michael Todd Roush, 25, of 141 S. Fulton St., Richwood. Roush is charged with one count of domestic violence.

2019 Police department statistics released

The Richwood Police Department released their statistics for the 2019 year. They handled a total of 10,497 calls for service. These calls were categorized in areas of traffic, criminal, public relations, crime deterrence, etc.

UCHD encourages radon testing

The Union County Health Department (UCHD) is encouraging local residents to have their homes tested for radon.
Union County, like most of Central Ohio, falls within the radon belt. This means local soil conditions could lead to high radon levels in homes.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, an estimated one in 15 homes in the U.S. have high radon levels.

Village council discusses 2020 Census

This is the year for the United States Census 2020, Mayor Scott Jerew told village council at Monday night’s regular meeting.

County Sheriff’s Office names employees of the year

Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton announced the 2019 employees of the year at the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Detective Adam Haycox, dispatcher Tiffany Cook and Christy Heckel have been named have earned the honors.
