The North Union Board of Education held a special meeting Wednesday, June 24 to handle some important items. All board members were in attendance.

As residents decide how to navigate life in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, local health department officials said testing is crucial to stopping the spread of the virus.

North Union School Superintendent Rich Baird has released information regarding the start of the 2020/2021 school year. The following information was released to parents and community members Monday evening.

Village looking into credit card payments

Since the Village of Richwood had a web site developed online, there is one information section that states “under construction.” That is regarding making payments of water and sewer bills, purchasing permits, reserving the park’s shelter houses, etc. For many people in today’s world, they don’t carry cash, only a debit or credit card.

Area receives nearly $1.2 million in COVID-19 relief

Last week, Union County officials listened to a vendor talk about their company’s mass body scanner, capable of taking a person’s core body temperature in a matter of seconds.
Common Pleas Court Judge Don Fraser has said he would like one, likely price tagged between $25,000 and $30,000, to scan every person entering the courthouse.

UCHD continues to prioritize contact tracing

Local officials are emphasizing the importance of contact tracing in stopping the spread of COVID-19, after Governor Mike DeWine upgraded Union County to a Level 2 Public Health Emergency.
Union County Health Department Public Information Officer Jennifer Thrush said contact tracing is the “cornerstone to our response effort.”

County recorder steps down; Riffle to take over

The Union County Commissioners have named Karen Riffle to serve as the acting county recorder.
Teresa Markham, the current Union County Recorder, has tendered a resignation effective July 31.

Board approves plan for new school year

Summer is half over and the students, parents, and school staff are all unsure about the start of the 2020-2021 school year. COVID-19 has turned the world upside down and every day more news comes out about taking precautions to stay safe. So the North Union Local School Board of Education approved a plan at Monday night’s regular meeting.

Health commissioner addresses false information
County has 33 active cases

Union County Health Commissioner Jason Orcena took time during the most recent Board of Health meeting to dispel misconceptions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the last few weeks have seen “an explosion in new cases,” Orcena said myths regarding the severity of the virus and public health’s response have circulated, as well.
“Some of it is misconception and some of it is fear and, unfortunately, too much is politicization,” he said.

Local state rep explains ties to House speaker

A local representative is speaking about her connection to Ohio Speaker of the House, Rep. Larry Householder.
“Tuesday was a sad day for the Ohio House of Representatives and for the people of Ohio,” Rep. Tracy Richardson, of Marysville, wrote in a statement to the Journal-Tribune this morning. “The allegations against Larry Householder stunned so many of us and sent shock waves through the Capitol. I felt particularly duped and disappointed since I had supported the Speaker with my vote at the start of the 133rd General Assembly.”

Council moves forward for online payments

At Monday’s Richwood Village Council meeting fiscal officer Sarah Sellers presented members of council with four new options to accept online credit card payments.

United Way opens annual school supply drive

United Way of Union County kicked off its annual “Learn United” School Supply Drive Monday.
“This year we had to be creative,” United Way Director Corinne Bix said. “As in year’s past, we have drop off locations around the county but we are also encouraging donations via our secure online platform and we created an Amazon Wish List where items can be shipped directly to our offices.”

Ohioans required to wear masks

Governor Mike DeWine announced last week that a statewide mask mandate would be into effect for citizens living in all 88 Ohio counties.
