Health dept. reports first virus-related death in county

Union County recorded its first death associated with COVID-19 Thursday, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health and the Union County Health Department.

Just hours after the Ohio Governor announced that local fair boards could and should make decisions about their local fairs, the Union County Fair Board set its plan to move forward.

Markham hired as asst. principal

The North Union Board of Education hired Brent Markham as the new assistant elementary principal for the 2020-2021 school year at North Union Elementary. The board approved his employment at last Monday’s regular board meeting. He will be working with Darlene Allison, the elementary principal.

FFA Banquet cancelled, awardees honored

The North Union FFA Chapter was unable to host their annual banquet during the school year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, so family and friends were unable to hear of their achievements during the year. The annual banquet draws in around 300 family members, school staff, donors and guests to hear about the events of the program.

Residents plead with council to pave road

Residents on Dudley Circle had had enough of dust-flying after every vehicle that drives on the street; garbage trucks, construction trucks and other vehicles turning around in private driveways. One resident has lived on that unpaved street for 14 years and is tired of the excuses as to why it has not been paved.

Farmer’s market welcomes public

It’s that time when area residents come to town to offer great deals on fresh fruits and vegetables, honey, maple syrup, baked goods, etc.
This is an opportunity to purchase items that may not be readily available in town and it saves travel time to other towns to purchase them. It also helps to shop locally.

Flag Day is Sunday, June 14

Get your American flag out to display on Sunday, June 14. Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption, June 14, 1777.

Eight FFA members receive state degrees

At the recent Ohio FFA Convention, North Union FFA members Sydney Berridge, Grace Burris, Caleb Isler, Chris Isler, Justin North, Garrett Schilling, Caden Smith and Dean Wolfe received their Ohio FFA Degree. The State FFA Degree is the highest degree a member can receive at the state level. Members must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the degree.

Pandemic creates challenges for courts

A recently scheduled jury trial was a return to normalcy for Union County Common Pleas Court.
Judge Don Fraser said the case is not high profile, but should offer a good indication of how prepared the courthouse is to deal with larger groups.

NU school board hopeful for start of school

North Union Superintendent Rich Baird talked with school board members Monday evening during their regular monthly meeting about how our students and staff dealt with the Coronavirus during the closure and year-end of the schools.

Summer utility help available

Beginning Wednesday, July 1, the Ohio Development Services Agency and Bridges Community Action Partnership will help income-eligible Ohioans maintain their utility service through the Home Energy Assistance Summer Crisis Program. The program helps eligible Ohioans pay an electric bill, purchase an air conditioning unit or fan, or pay for central aid conditioning repairs. This year, the program will run from July 1 until September 30, 2020.

Dudley Circle project moves forward

For several years, residents who live on the east side of Dudley Circle have been waiting for a paved street in their neighborhood. They have been told for several years that it would be finished. Richwood Village Council has met with contractor Jason Wills and finally have approved  a design and a timeline for the long awaited street. Several Dudley Circle residents came to the meeting to see what council’s plans were to get the project started.

128th Richwood Independent Fair is set to take place

Everyone will agree that the year 2020 has been nothing less than challenging in our daily lives, work lives, school, you name it. We want to get life back to normal, and the Richwood Fair Board is hoping to do just that.
The board has voted to hold the annual independent fair, set for Wednesday, Sept. 2 through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7. The general idea is to continue to host a Junior and Senior Fair, with a few adjustments.

Destination Imagination participates in summer of creativity tournament

Like so many things this spring, the competition season for North Union’s Destination Imagination teams was cut short after the regional tournament.  However, due to some creative problem solving on the part of DI Headquarters, the annual Global Finals held in Kansas City, Missouri is going virtual.

Memorial eases visitor restrictions
