Uncle shoots
nephew in Pharisburg

A local man is in critical condition and his uncle is behind bars after a
shooting Sunday.
Richard A. Smith Jr., 52, of 13163 Route 347 was arraigned recently in
Marysville Municipal Court. He is charged with one count of felonious
assault.
Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton said the victim, Timothy D. Smith, is in
“critical but stable condition” as of Monday at the Ohio State
University’s Wexner Medical Center.
Former fiscal officer to pay back money owed to
Village

According to Mayor Scott Jerew’s report during the Village of Richwood
Council meeting, Village Solicitor Alison Boggs called the village’s
former fiscal officer Tim Goodwin, who is required to pay nearly $20,000
in penalty fees following a report from the state auditor’s office.
Goodwin will reportedly be out of town for three weeks, but he “wants to
make it right with the village,” Boggs told the mayor. Goodwin wants to
get an attorney to draft up an agreement for the council’s consideration.
With Goodwin out of town, Boggs recommended that council give him until
Aug. 9 before voting on the next legal action for payment. Boggs was not
in attendance at the meeting.
Committee member resigns

Laurie Eliot-Shea resigned from the Richwood Revitalization Committee, a
subcommittee of the Village of Richwood Council, effective on July 9
following Village Solicitor Alison Boggs’ suggestion that a committee have
a maximum of two council members as voting members.
Union County to receive rapid drug testing device

A recent grand jury indicted Adam Kaetzel on a series of drug charges from
nearly 15 months ago.
The delay, said Union County Prosecutor Dave Phillips, was caused by the
amount of time it takes the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal
Investigation and Identification to test suspected drugs. He said
suspected drugs need to be tested to verify what they are before someone
can be charged with having something illegal.
Franklin
street project unearths past

Underground Utilities of Monroeville resumed work on South Franklin Street
in Richwood on Monday, including ripping out the base of the road and
installing new curbs and sidewalks. The construction crews will build a
new base of two and a half inches of compressed asphalt for the road.
Opera House has ally in local author

Dustin Lowe, local historian and author of “The Rich Woods of Union
County: A Comprehensive History of Richwood, Ohio,” is willing to donate
all proceeds of his book sale in addition to $1,000 of his own money to
keep the Richwood Opera House in use.
New legislation won’t impact local solar farms

Recently, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation allowing local
authorities to limit wind and solar farms in Ohio, though it will likely
not impact a pair of projects already proposed for the area.
Civic Center looking for new home with building set
to sell

Officials with the Richwood Civic Center are looking for a new home.
“We are not going away. We are going to be around for a long time,” said
Richwood Civic Center Executive Director Susie Pfarr. “We are just looking
for something that is better suited for what we want to do.”
Antique Farm Machinery Show returns to Richwood

School board provides COVID-19 update

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new
guidelines for school settings on July 9, but North Union Local Schools
Superintendent Richard Baird told the North Union Board of Education
Monday night that the guidelines do not significantly change the district
continuity plan.

A Richwood man could be facing more than a decade in prison after
allegedly abducting and injuring a woman then running from police.
School board approves staff changes

The North Union Board of Education approved the employment, volunteer and
resignation statuses of staff members effective the 2021-22 school year,
pending BCI/FBI clearance and appropriate licensure during its meeting on
July 19 at the administrative offices off Route 739.
Committee working to become legal

The Richwood Revitalization Committee, a subcommittee of the Village of
Richwood Council, did not make its membership legal at the July 22 meeting
because all voting members were not present. Of the total 10 voting
members, three will be asked to voluntarily become alternates at an
upcoming meeting.

Shelia’s Flowers celebrates 25 years in Village

Sheila’s Flowers and Gifts, 8 N. Franklin St. in Richwood, will celebrate
its 25th anniversary in August.
Sheila Bradford established the business in the summer of 1996 with her
sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Rob Anderson.
“It was just something I’ve always done,” Bradford said.
