Proposal concerns local bank industry

Richwood Banking Company president and CEO Chad Hoffman is raising concerns about a proposed plan help to help the IRS better audit taxpayers.
President Joe Biden’s administration proposal would require financial institutions to report the total amount of money flowing into and out of bank accounts of $600 or more.

COVID-19 booster shot appointments available through UC health dept.

The Union County Health Department is now offering COVID-19 booster shots to a certain group of eligible individuals.
In accordance with CDC guidance, only those who completed their second Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least six months ago are eligible to receive a booster shot through UCHD.

City, county feel impact of vehicle shortages

Delays in auto production are creating problems not only for private consumers, but also for public customers.
Each year, Union County and local municipalities purchase dozens of vehicles. This year, delivery of those vehicles could be delayed significantly.

Activities planned in Richwood this month for Halloween fun

Businesses and nonprofits in the Village of Richwood have planned a variety of seasonal activities this month as Halloween approaches.
The Richwood-North Union Public Library is offering craft bags to teens for a virtual program on Oct. 14 in which they will carve pumpkins with provided metal hardware.

Veterans Day program announced for Nov. 7
Veterans Day in November is a reminder of all veterans who have served or are serving. The Veterans Remembrance Committee has scheduled the Veterans Day Program for Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. on the Union County Courthouse lawn at the plaza, 215 W. Fifth St. Lt. Col. James A. Curry will be the focus of the program for the Voice from the Stone. Rick Curry, a retired U.S. Army veteran, will be the guest speaker.

Four seats open on Village of Richwood Council, incumbents seek reelection

Editor’s Note: The Richwood Gazette staff made multiple attempts to contact all candidates running for council in the Village of Richwood. The candidates who are featured responded by the deadline. Candidates were asked to submit personal information about themselves and their stances on issues facing the village. Submitted statements varied in length among candidates.

Five candidates are vying for four open seats on the Village of Richwood Council in the Nov. 2 election.
Three incumbents, Patrick Morse, Von Beal and George Showalter, have terms expiring this year and are seeking reelection. Jackie Hamilton and Steven Siufanua are running as well.

The North Union Local School District had seven confirmed COVID-19 positive cases among six students and one staff member as of Monday, Superintendent Richard Baird told the school board at its meeting that evening.

Village council appoints Spain as new solicitor

The Village of Richwood Council agreed to release Alison Boggs from her duties as village solicitor so she can focus on the work of her private practice and hire Julie Spain to fill the role during its meeting last Monday, Oct. 11.

Tri-Rivers Career Center seeks votes for renewal levy on November ballot

Tri-Rivers Career Center seeks approval of a 1.3 mill renewal levy for current operating expenses.
According to the Union County Auditor, the cost to taxpayers remains the same as the existing levy, $20.98 per $100,000 of property value per year.

Water interest rates to increase in new year

The Village of Richwood Council voted to increase the water interest rates for residents by 2% annually.
Craig Mescher, a project manager at Access Engineering, gave a presentation about the projection of revenues and expenses of the village’s water system with yearly interest rate increases from 1% to 2%.

Hall, incumbents seek NU board of education seats

Matthew Hall, 49, is running for a seat on the North Union Board of Education to replace Jean Wedding, who did not seek reelection for another term. Incumbents Brian Davis and Matthew Staley are also running to remain on the board.

Solar farm could pay nearly $2.5M annually

The Union County Commissioners are meeting with solar farm developers to discuss finances and tax incentives.
Officials with Invenergy, the company hoping to develop the Cadence Solar project, recently asked the Union County Commissioners to consider approving the facility’s application as a qualified energy project.
That approval would allow the project to make an annual payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT).

Halloween activities in area this week
The second annual Haunted Trail at Richwood Park will take place Friday from 8-11 p.m.  Free refreshments, hot dogs and chips will be provided.  Free hay rides will also be available.
The North Union Athletic Committee (NUAC) will also host the second annual Skeleton Skedaddle 5K run/walk and two-mile walk on Friday, beginning at Richwood Park at 7 p.m.
According to the Richwood Area Business Association, events originally slated for Saturday, Oct. 30 ,were rescheduled for the North Union High School football home playoff game.
In addition, Claibourne United Methodist Church, located at 26434 Claibourne Road, is hosting a  Trunk or Treat Saturday from 5-7 p.m.

RAMA helps with holiday meals

The Richwood Area Ministerial Association (RAMA) is inviting the public to help families in need this holiday season by providing funds for meals.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, there will not be a Festival of Thanks for the community this year. Most of the donations come from this event to support the mission of providing meat for meals. Instead, the public is invited to support families with their holiday meals by making a check out to RAMA and mailing it to First UMC, 18 S. Fulton St. in Richwood.
