Fairbanks’ varsity boys basketball squad earned its second conference win of the season.
The Panthers traveled to Mechanicsburg and pounded the Indians, 44-11.
“I was proud of the way we finished the game and finished quarters,” Fairbanks coach Zach Brown said. “We are just continuing to get better.”
Catching fire quickly, Fairbanks held a 10-2 lead after the first quarter.
Five points by Ryker Green, two free throws from Holtz Maine and a three-pointer by AJ Landon contributed in the team’s initial performance.
Mechanicsburg’s Deacon Meade scored the team’s only first goal of the period.
Fairbanks began to pull away in the following quarter as Green took the helm in the scoring department. The sophomore guard notched three field goals and one trifecta.
Younger players such as Green and Brayden Wiedmann are being counted on to help the team’s offense.
“Brayden Wiedmann was doing a really good job for us and at the point steering the ship,” Brown noted about the individual performances during the first half. “We are relying on some young guys to do some big things for us.”
As a team, the Panthers were able to outscore the Indians 29-2 in the second period. Mechanicsburg’s Eli Wilson took credit for the Indians’ only basket.
Just as the first half drew to a close, Dylan Wiedmann dropped in a three-pointer just at the buzzer.
That sent FHS into halftime with a commanding 37-4 advantage.
The Panthers were able to invoke the running clock rule in the third quarter with around 6:30 left.
Fairbanks stayed on the attack, pulling together a seven-point performance compared to the Indians’ three points.
FHS held a 44-7 lead as play moved into the final eight minutes.
The Panthers are 3-1 overall and have a 2-0 record in the Ohio Heritage Conference.
“One of our goals as a team is to win the OHC North Division and we are putting ourselves in a good position right now early in the season,” Brown said.
Fairbanks is scheduled to face off against Northeastern in another road game on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
“I just hope we continue to get better,” Brown said.
