The Marysville wrestling team came out of the gate firing on all cylinders winning eight of their nine matches during the first round of the OHSAA District tournament at Hilliard Darby High School.
The second round proved to be a different story though with the Monarchs only able to notch four wins and currently stand in fifth place with 46.5 points.
Dublin Coffman leads the District Tournament with 67.5 followed by Olentangy Liberty with 64 and Upper Arlington with 53.5. Tallying 47 point and just ahead of the Monarchs is Delaware Hayes.
During the second round Josh Melms was pinned by Jacob Sherman of Olentangy in 1:05 and Tyler Winfield gave up a major decision to Liberty’s Lucas Uliano,10-1 but Lincoln Heard put the Monarchs in the win column when he got a late takedown to eake out a 5-3 overtime battle with Sylvester Bockarie of Westerville North.
Shaun Will kept the momentum going for the Monarchs when he beat Jacob Grant of Westerville North, 3-2 and Walker Heard had an easy time with Sihlas Padmore of Walnut Ridge tech falling him 18-3.
Zach Lowe was pinned by Cole Foor of Watkins Memorial in 2:48 and Logan Painter gave up a last second take down to Deron Pulliam of Dublin Scioto to lose 5-3.
Ethan Smegal ended the night in dominant fashion pinning Nathan Robinson of Delaware Hayes in 3:39.
The Monarchs officially qualified ten wrestlers but 113-Nathan Thompson didn’t pass a skin check and was ruled out.
The rest of the team, including Blayne Landon who lost 2-1 in the first round will be back on the mats today with consolations starting at 10am and semi-finals around noon.
