Fairbanks
The Triad Lady Cardinal hoopsters opened Ohio Heritage Conference action with a 42-20 win over the visiting Fairbanks Panthers on Saturday.
The Lady Cardinals got off to an 11-1 lead and never looked back.
“Our defense was really good tonight,” said Cardinal coach Jeff Merklin.
“Fairbanks runs a nice half-court offense with good screening and I thought our girls communicated very well most of the night.
“We had numerous points off forced turnovers,” he said. “It was a really nice effort.”
Triad hit only 28 percent from the field (15-53), but Merklin was happy with the balanced scoring.
“We had four girls with at least six points, which is how we’re going to have to go this year to have success,” he said.
Cati LeVan scored 14 points and dished for four assists, to lead Triad, while Makenzie Cauley had nine points to go with 16 rebounds.
Macy Wanamaker was the Lady Panthers’ top scorer with five points, while Dani Headings, Michaela Writesel and Joelle Ziegler each added three points during the contest.
With the win, Triad moves to 2-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in the OHC North.
