The Lady Monarch tennis team opened its 2020 season on Friday with a 3-2 triumph over Hilliard Darby.
Freshman Mallory Huffman earned her first varsity victory.
She defeated Lexis Mincy 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 during the first singles match.
Emma Pzedpelski of MHS captured the second singles contest with a 6-1, 6-1 verdict over Makenzie Davis.
The first doubles team of Krista O’Shelski and Caitlee Lee downed Darby’s Katelyn Irwin and Hallie Zacatelco 6-2, 6-3.
Hanna Hogan of Marysville dropped the third singles match to Allison Noeln 3-6, 5-7.
Megan Vollrath and Chloe Bryan of MHS fell during the second doubles contest.
They lost to Makenzie Robertson and Chantrea Thip 4-6, 6-3.
The Lady Monarchs placed second during Saturday’s Delaware Hayes tournament.
Olentangy took top honors with 26 points, followed by Marysville-21, Westerville North-20, Delaware-17, Buckeye Valley-11 and Hayes’ B squad-nine.
MHS results were as follows:
-Second singles: Pzedpelski won her bracket and finished in first place. She scored wins of 8-0, 8-0, 8-2;
-First doubles: O’Shelski and Hill finished in first place in their bracket. They captured matches with scores of 8-2, 8-3 and 8-7 ( tiebreaker win 7-3);
-Third singles: Hogan took third place with scores of 8-0, 5-7, 8-2;
-First singles: Huffman finished fourth overall with scores of 6-7 (lost a tiebreaker 0-7), 8-2, 1-8;
-Second doubles: Bryan and Vollrath finished fourth with scores of 0-8, 8-4 and 7-8 (tie breaker 4-7.)
“The two first places were our first ever at the Delaware tournament,” said Marysville coach Bill Romine. “Chloe Bryan and Megan Vollrath earned their first varsity wins.”
