A tournament game involving fifth and sixth-seeded teams can go either way.
A contest held at Grove City High School Tuesday afternoon favored the lower-seeded squad in a huge way.
The No. 6 Lady Monarchs of Marysville clubbed fifth-seeded Grove City, 10-1, in a Division I district semifinal game.
The host Greyhounds plated their lone run in the second inning.
Marysville tied the score with a run in the visitors’ portion of the third.
The Lady Monarchs (18-9) broke the contest open with seven runs in the fifth.
Ella Wood led off the inning with a base hit and scored on a hit by Camryn Harbold.
Josie Bumgarner was issued a free pass.
With two runners on base, Jaidan Hutchins blasted a home run.
Lauren Mobley doubled and Sienna Hutchins drew a walk with two down.
Maya Segner hit safely to plate a run.
An error off Wood’s bat provided for the additional runs in the inning.
Jaiden Hutchins hit her second homer – a solo shot – of the day in the sixth.
Ally Clementz also sent the ball over the fence during the inning.
“We hit the ball pretty well today,” said MHS head coach Jennifer Segner-Maxwell.
Marysville finished the game with 13 hits.
The Hutchins sisters both tallied three hits, while Harbold finished with two.
“We played well defensively (only one error) and Josie pitched a great game,” said the coach. “She kept Grove City off-balance.
“Good things happen when all three aspects of the game are on point,” she said.
Bumgarner pitched six innings and yielded six hits. She struck out one and walked one.
Brooklyn Gamby took over in the seventh to finish the contest. She fanned one batter.
The Lady Monarchs will play for their third consecutive district title on Friday at 5 p.m.
The contest will be played at Pickerington Central High School against either No. 4 Delaware Hayes or No. 7 Teays Valley.
