JA wins D-II sectional title; Reed-Body, Chapman place first
Jonathan Alder’s boys wrestling squad tallied 196 points to claim a Division II sectional wrestling title on Saturday.
The Pioneers outdistanced runner-up Licking Valley (168) during the tournament that was held at Licking Valley High School.
Rounding out the top five of the 21-team event were London-165, River Valley-133 and Columbus Bishop Hartley-129.
Reece Chapman (113) was the lone sectional champion for the Pioneers.
He scored a 1:22 pin over Dominick Keefe of Bloom Carroll during the semifinals.
Chapman then claimed the title with a 1-0 victory over Cooper Rathburn of Hartley.
Other top four finishers who advanced to next week’s district tournament are as follows:
-Xavier Pierce (106), second;
– Josh Proper (120); second;
-Oliver Byerly (138); second;
-Eli Turbovich (126), third;
-Carson Griner (152); third;
-Owen Crabtree (145), fourth;
-Pryce Watson (170), fourth.
Pierce toppled Bloom-Carroll’s Matthew Bloom in the semifinals in 1:25.
He then fell in the championship match to London’s Brady Fisher by a 2-0 count.
Proper tallied a 17-2 technical fall in the semifinals over Lakewood’s Caleb Rafferty.
He dropped the title match to DeSales’ Owen Eagan by a 3:36 pinfall.
Byerly turned in an 8-3 semifinal verdict against Columbus Bishop Watterson’s Leo Pavell.
The title match saw the JA grappler edged by Josiah Kennedy of London, 8-6.
-Also placing for the Pioneers were:
-Will Heisler (195), fifth;
-Zach Yates (132), Dominic Kroninger (220) and Damon Hay (Hwt.), sixth.
Alder will compete during the district tournament this weekend at Wilmington High School.
Division III
The mat teams from North Union and Fairbanks respectively placed 10th and 11th during the sectional tournament that was held at Madison Plains on Saturday.
NU tallied 80 points and the Panthers finished with 66.
Billy Reed-Bodey of FHS claimed the heavyweight championship. He scored a 4-2 tie-breaker over Drew Walker of Liberty Union to secure the crown.
Caleb Isler of North Union captured third-place accolades in the 145-pound division.
He earned that spot with a 6-5 ultimate tiebreaker verdict over Joshua Sullivan of Mt. Gilead.
Reed-Bodey and Isler will advance to next weekend’s district tournament at Coshocton.
Also advancing to the district will be Trace Williams (113) and Casey Clark (126) of North Union and Fairbanks’ Tucker Green (195).
They each placed fourth in their weight brackets.
Williams fell in the bout for third and fourth-place to Radeyn Parman of Northridge by a 4-2 decision.
Clark placed fourth after falling by a 16-0 technical fall to Michael Fister of Northridge.
Green finished fourth after he was pinned in 4:06 by Jonah Bibler of Pleasant.
Additional local grapplers who placed were as follows:
-Gabe Hansen (132), North Union, fifth;
-Ashton Griffith (182), Fairbanks, fifth;
-Connor McCardle (170), Fairbanks, sixth;
-Shan Swank (182), North Union, sixth.
Griffith topped Swank, 13-6, in the battle for fifth and sixth place.
Triad’s grapplers placed ninth (55 points) during the sectional tournament that was held at Covington.
Senior Isiah Leasure (182) earned a spot in the district tournament for the second consecutive year.
He placed third in his weight class during the sectional.
Thomas Ford, a sophomore at 195 pounds, earned his first trip to the district.
He earned fourth place in his weight class.
Senior Coleman Hauk and Freshman Jacob Haser earned fifth-place finishes.
That qualifies them as district tournament alternates.
Greenon won the 13-team sectional with 215 points.
Covington was the runner-up with 179.
Triad’s district tournament will be held at Hobart Arena in Troy next weekend.
