The Marysville High School varsity wrestling team will once again be well-represented at the Central District All-Star match.
Competition will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. at Bexley High School.
A total of seven Monarchs are either scheduled to see action or serve as an alternate as a preseason tune-up for the 2017-18 campaign.
In weight class order, they are Quintin Miller (106), Michael Jones (113), Jake Marsh (145), Walker Heard (152), Tyler Bates (170), Ethan Smegal (220) and Tyler Connolly (285).
They each bring impressive credentials into the preseason counter that will feature the top grapplers from the Central District.
Miller, a senior, posted an 18-10 record a year ago.
“Quintin was a first-year wrestler who found his way into the lineup at the end of the season,” said Monarch head coach Shawn Andrews. “He made the most of his opportunity, finishing second in the Division I sectional and posting a 1-2 record at the district tournament.”
Miller will compete against Manny Hielman of Northmor.
Jones was having a stellar sophomore campaign a year ago until he was sidelined with an injury. He was still able to finish with a 25-11 record.
“The highlight of Michael’s sophomore season was finishing first at the Dublin Scioto Kevin Cleveland Invitational,” said Andrews.
Jones will take to the mat against Marion Franklin’s Jalin Goodman.
Marsh, a senior, will be looking for his fourth berth in the state tournament in late February.
He finished the 2016-17 season with a 42-7 record.
“Jacob placed in the always-tough Ironman tournament and won the Brecksville and Top Gun events last year,” said Andrews.
Marsh, who placed sixth in the state as a sophomore, will battle Conon Becker of Northmor.
Heard, a junior, went 42-7 last year, en route to a seventh-place finish in the state tournament.
“Walker won a district title a year ago and is a two-time state qualifier,” said Andrews.
Heard is set to tangle with Conor Becker of Northmor.
Another senior, Bates led the Monarchs in victories last season as he compiled a won-loss record of 46-12.
“Tyler placed eighth in the state tournament a year ago,” said Andrews.
Bates will face Mitchel Miracle of River Valley.
Smegal, a junior, had to move down a weight class to earn mat time late last season.
“Ethan wrestled at 285 most of the season behind Tyler Connolly,” said Andrews. “He made 220 for the post-season and was a sectional runner-up.”
Smegal (19-8 overall) finished with a 1-2 record in the district tournament.
He is listed as an alternate for the All-Star match.
Connolly, a junior, finished with a 40-13 record as he also qualified for the state tournament.
“Tyler finished third at the district tournament,” said Andrews. “He led our team with 25 of his 40 victories coming on pins.”
Connolly is scheduled to compete against Grant Robinson of Bexley.
