Marysville’s girls lacrosse team continued its downward trend following a 17-2 loss to Thomas Worthington.
It marked the fourth straight loss for the Lady Monarchs, who have been outscored 44-12 by opponents so far this season.
Thomas Worthington was aggressive on the offensive front, rarely dropping passes while maintaining a quick style of play.
Thomas Worthington went on to record 23 shots on goal compared to Marysville’s four.
The lopsided shots produced a flurry of goals in favor of the Lady Cardinals.
At the draw, TW also showed prowess, winning 17 face-offs, compared to Marysville’s three.
Despite the loss, MHS coach Whitney Brofford was pleased with how the team showed what they have been working on in practice.
“Something that we’ve been working on from our last game was our transition from the midfield,” she said. “Tonight just showed us they are working on it.”
TW started its scoring spree with 11 goals in the first quarter.
A total of three goals came from Macy Morgan and Haley Gee.
Worthington added another four goals in the second period to take a 15-0 lead at the half.
“They were letting the other team pull them out of their zones and they couldn’t get back fast enough,” Brofford said.
After another score by TW midway through the third quarter, Addison Bartlett secured the first goal for MHS.
Audrey Watson notched the final goal for Marysville midway in the fourth quarter.
With the contest already out of reach, TW notched its last goal in the final seconds of the game.
“I am not mad about the score,” Brofford said. “The way we played in the second half showed that they are coachable. They take what we see and fix it.”
Inside the cage, Marysville’s Kat Schoenleb collected 10 saves.
The Lady Monarchs fell to 0-4 for the season.
Marysville will host Buckeye Valley today at 6 p.m.
New this season, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) issued a change to girls lacrosse at the high school level. Instead of two halves, teams play 12-minute quarters.
While Brofford had never played in quarter segments at the high school level, she had some thoughts about the changes this season.
“Since it is new, it’s still really confusing for the girls,” she said. “As a coach, I don’t know if I like it.”
Her confusion stems from not knowing when a timeout should be called, adding the quarter-break slows down the momentum on the field.
“It is really good in games where we have less girls because we get more breaks,” Brofford said. “But on games that are fast-paced, it’s hard because we lose our momentum.”
Boys fall to Cardinals
In the same evening, Marysville’s boys lacrosse team fell to T. Worthington, 14-4.
MHS goals came from Ben Durey, Julian Kennedy, Hunter Sheldon and Dusty Bernard.
Durey also recorded an assist.
Goalie Sean McGee collected 14 saves on 42 shots.
Ethan Grome and Zach Bisang were credited with face-off wins.
The junior varsity tied with Thomas Worthington prior to the varsity matchup, 4-4.
Nick Cavinee recorded a hat-trick (three goals) with Matt Hoyt also scoring. Jackson Prestowood claimed an assist.
Goalies Maddox Barker and Saxton Bond combined for 15 saves while seeing 34 shots on goal.
Grome and Blake Bertram each had face-off wins.
