Marysville’s varsity volleyball squad opened the season with two victories in three matches on Saturday.
The Lady Monarchs hosted several teams during their annual Spike-Off tournament.
Due to a glitch in the new statistic program, no match scores or individual performances were available.
The Lady Monarchs opened the tournament with a two-set victory over Dayton Stivers.
Head coach Bethany Bentz said MHS’ strong front line was key to the triumph.
Chillicothe was the next Marysville victim, as the Lady Monarchs again won in a pair of games.
The victory propelled MHS into the championship finals against Pickerington North.
The Lady Monarchs dropped the match to finish as runners-up.
Bentz liked what she saw from her team.
“The Gossett sisters – Carys and Rhiannon – played side-by-side on the front row and created a strong force,” she said. “Alyssa Codner looked strong as an outside hitter.
“We also got strong defense and serve receptions from libero Morgan Shick.”
Jonathan Alder also went 2-1 in the tournament.
The Lady Pioneers beat Dublin Jerome and Westerville South.
They fell to Pickerington North.
