The Marysville High School varsity football team got a head-start on the 2019 preseason with a three-day camp this week.
MHS head coach Brent Johnson was pleased with the work his team has put in during the summer.
“The guys are playing hard,” said Johnson, who is beginning his third season at the Monarch helm.
The inclement weather on Wednesday forced the team indoors in the school’s field house, but the Monarchs were still able to work on drills.
“Our seniors have done a good job this summer as leaders,” said Johnson.
The MHS coaching staff is looking at several athletes who will replace the graduated Walker Heard at the quarterback position.
Those who are taking snaps include seniors Nathan Morey and former North Union gridder Carson Smith, along with juniors Logan McSwords and Adam Schwartz.
Sophomores include Ethan Muscher, Tanner Powers and Tyler Weber.
“It’s still too early to tell who has the upper hand at quarterback,” said Johnson. “We’re still using this time to evaluate the candidates.”
The Monarch head coach is pleased with what he’s seen from the entire squad during the camp.
He said that Matt Belt and Ian Johnson are looking strong along the offensive line, as is Ryan Kerns at fullback.
“We’re going to have a strong defensive front,” said Johnson. “Our linebackers are small, but they are all very good downhill runners.”
Marysville will carry a varsity roster (grades 10-12) that numbers 73.
“That’s deeper than we have been the past few years,” said Johnson.
The Monarchs wrapped up their week’s work with a seven-on-seven passing scrimmage on Thursday at Dublin Scioto.
Preseason practice will begin on Thursday, Aug. 1.
The Monarchs’ first scrimmage will be at Hilliard Bradley at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.
Their preview scrimmage will be held on Friday, Aug. 23 at Hilliard Darby, 7:30 p.m.
