The pitching and defense each performed very well for North Union in its Central Buckeye Conference baseball game against Shawnee on Monday at North Union.
The Wildcats’ Tyler Krebehenne surrendered just six hits and the defense committed only one error.
North Union, though, could only get three hits off Shawnee pitcher Zach Hennigan and suffered a 2-1 loss.
“Hennigan pitched a little better than Tyler did,” NU head coach Nick Blakeley said. “TK was awesome and probably deserved better.”
Hennigan struck out 13 and did not walk a batter.
Krebehenne struck out four and walked three.
Shawnee (5-3 overall, 3-2 CBC) scored a run in the first inning on a ground out.
The Wildcats (5-4, 2-4) tied the game in the fourth inning.
Caden Potts opened the inning with a single and Landon Converse followed with another single.
Both runners advanced on a Hennigan balk.
Potts scored on a sacrifice fly by Evan Beery,
Hennigan, however, allowed just one more batter to reach base, hitting Connor Lassiter with a pitch in the fifth.
Blakeley is hoping his team will get better with its hitting.
“We will get back to work and figure it out,” he said.

Lady Cats triumph
North Union won Monday’s Central Buckeye Conference softball game against Shawnee by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
However, it was what happened earlier in the game that was just as important in the 4-3 home victory over the Braves.
The Lady Cats picked up their sixth straight win, but it was the first time they had trailed after the first inning during the winning streak.
“We scored in the bottom of the seventh inning, but I am most proud that we came back after being down 3-0,” North Union head coach Pat Grove said. “We were down but we fought back and did not let up.”
Shawnee, (9-2 overall, 5-1 CBC) scored all of its runs in the second inning and North Union (7-3, 4-2) missed out on several opportunities in the early innings.
It did score a run in the third on a RBI-scoring single by Reese DeCamp.
Emma Padovano got the Lady Cats one run closer with a home run in the sixth.
They followed with the tying run when Kailin McElroy scored all the way from first on a Shawnee error after a ball hit by Zoe Wedding.
North Union needed just three batters to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
DeCamp and Kale Keigley opened the frame with singles.
Ryleigh Rasey tried twice to advance the runners with a bunt, only to not be successful.
“I just wanted to somehow get one run home,” Grove said.
Rasey rebounded to get that run home with a line drive up the alley in left center to score DeCamp.
Grove also cited the play of his sophomore outfield corps of Sierra Farrington, Keigley and Emma McElroy.
“Our outfield was outstanding,” he said, citing several catches that kept Shawnee from extra-base hits.
DeCamp, who had three singles at the plate, pitched a complete game. She allowed five hits, fannedt five and walked four.
Keigley also had three hits, including a double, while Padovano had a double to go with her home run.
Kennedy Harrah, Kailin McElroy and Rasey each had singles.
