Quarterback Logan McCoy engineered a pair of fourth-quarter scoring drives as the Triad Cardinals rallied past Cedarville, 35-34, on Friday.
“Logan played outstanding,” said coach Joe Cardinal.
McCoy and Jordan Simonelli split time at the position. It was Simonelli’s first action of the season as he was coming off a preseason injury.
“We two-platooned Logan and Jordan,” said Cardinal. “Jordan was a little rusty at first, as was to be expected. However, he played well.”
The Cardinals (4-1) held an 8-7 edge after the opening period on Dylan Rice’s three-yard run and Jacob Jenkins’ two-point conversion.
Cedarville took a 20-15 lead at halftime.
The lone Cardinal score in the second quarter was Rice’s 13-yard run. Tyson Brown kicked the extra point.
Rice scored on a 10-yard run during the third quarter and Simonelli tallied a two-point conversion.
Cedarville, though, took a 34-23 lead into the final period.
The Cardinals rallied when McCoy rifled a 28-yard pass to Isaiah Bruce and then a 19-yard strike to Austin Bails to win the game.
Rice carried the ball 28 times for 183 yards, while Bruce caught seven passes for 154 yards.
McCoy and Simonelli combined to complete 11 passes in 29 attempts for 216 yards.
“We ran Dylan a lot tonight and it basically came down to him and the work of our offensive line,” said Cardinal.
Triad’s defense was led by Riley Louck, who came through with 11 tackles. Cameron Boes added 10.
The Cardinals will travel to Northeastern on Friday.
JA tops Lakers
The Jonathan Alder Pioneers had very little trouble cracking the .500 mark with their 42-7 victory over Indian Lake.
JA withstood a nearly one-hour lightning delay to capture its third victory against a pair of losses.
Alder held a 14-7 lead when the delay went into effect.
The Pioneers took a 7-0 edge on quarterback J.T. Keith’s one-yard run and Jackson Welsch’s extra point.
The Lakers tied the game with a touchdown and extra point.
Alder, though, took a 14-7 margin into the second quarter on Jacob Fenik’s 34-yard run and Welsch’s conversion.
JA (which will host Graham for Homecoming on Friday) took a 28-7 lead at halftime.
Mason Seum scored on a four-yard run and Keith connected with Dawson Detwiler on a four-yard pass.
Welsch booted both extra points.
“We scored right after we started to play again after the delay,” said Alder coach Brett Glass. “That helped set the momentum for us.”
The Pioneers’ third-quarter touchdowns came on a two-yard run by Seum and an 82-yard jaunt by Garrett Proximire.
Alder tallied more than 400 yards in total offense. Proxmire rushed for 161 yards, while Keith was 10-of-15 in the air for 120.
“Our offense was pretty efficient,” said Glass. “We cleaned up a lot of stuff from last week, cut down on our penalties and didn’t have any negative plays.
“We gave up a score during the first quarter, but after that our defense tightened up,” he said. “This game allowed us to play some of our younger guys toward the end.”
