The 2019 Great Lakes Zone swimming championships were recently held at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the main campus of The Ohio State University.
The meet attracted 1,262 swimmers from 87 different YMCA’s from the states of Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan and Indiana.
The Union County Family YMCA fielded its largest squad ever for the event as 11 athletes competed.
The girls placed 50th and the boys finished 52nd.
Union County results in the top 20 of each event were as follows:
Girls
-Rachel Poling, eighth, 15 and over 100 breaststroke, 1:08.84;
-Poling, 11th, 15 and over 50 breaststroke, 31.49;
-Poling, 17th, 15 and over 200 breaststroke 2:33.14;
-Senior 200 medley relay (Mikayla Seman, Poling, Morgan Grawe, Diana Jimenez), 19th, 1:56.65;
-Molly Gregory, 20th, 13-14 100 breaststroke, 1:12.12.
Boys
-Gabe Filbert, eighth, 11-12 100 butterfly, 1:03.76;
-Filbert, 10th, 11-12 50 butterfly, 27.96;
-Filbert, 11th, 11-12 50 freestyle, 25.48;
-Filbert, 12th, 11-12 100 IM, 1:05.31;
-Filbert, 19th, 12 and under 200 IM, 2:24.22.
“We had an outstanding meet as a team,” said coach Craig Faircloth. “A total of 71 percent of our individual events resulted in a best time, which was an outstanding high percentage as a team.
“Individually, we had two swimmers (Poling and Filbert) medal by placing in the top eight in their event.”
Poling will have one more meet this season when she competes in the 100 breaststroke at the 2019 YMCA Nationals on April 5 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
