Fairbanks’ 2018 Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) made history as it attended nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 28 to July 3.
The eight attendees all placed first or second at states in order to qualify for nationals.
The graduated seniors, Kira Jones and Marissa Nicol, were partners who received gold at nationals for “Life Event” planning. Sisters Savannah and Zoe Walls received silver for their topic “National Programs in Action.” Maddie Weisburn competed solo and received silver in her “Leadership” topic. Finally, Sarah LaPointe, Kaidie Carstensen and Lexi Murray competed in “Environmental Ambassadors,” receiving gold and placing fourth in the nation.
Advisor Laura Falk is incredibly proud of the leadership her girls showed in how they represented Fairbanks High School.
Apart from competition, the girls participated in seminars on leadership during the day, and in the evening, went sightseeing around Atlanta as they visited locations such as the World of Coke.
The highlight of the trip for the girls was a dance held by FCCLA. At the dance the girls had two options: a regular homecoming style dance upstairs and a silent disco dance downstairs.
In the silent disco, the dancers had headphones that have three different stations represented by the colors red, blue and green. The colors indicate who is listening to the same song. The Fairbanks girls were a little skeptical at first about this new thing they had never tried, however once they stepped out of their comfort zones, one described the experience as the best she’s ever had.
Fairbanks FCCLA is excited to see what is in store for them this year. Possibilities for competition are endless as Nationals are being held in Anaheim, California.
