Unseasonably warm temperatures, which pushed into the 60s, led to very large crowds along the route for the Marysville Christmas Parade on Sunday. At left, with watchers lined up many rows deep along the route, this young boy found a better view of the parade from his dad’s shoulders. Additional photos from the Christmas parade can be found at www.marysvillejt.com. (Journal-Tribune photos by Chad Williamson)

After spending $3.3 million in 2018, next year will see $9.9 in capital improvement expenses, which cover renovations, technology upgrades and equipment purchases. Included in those expenses are some major upgrades within the imaging departments. Memorial will be spending $1.4 million to purchase new 3D mammography equipment…

“Candy-monium” – a parade gone bad Several years ago after viewing a Marysville Homecoming parade, I wrote a column essentially saying that someone was going to get killed. I’m back to make that claim once again. When I wrote the original column I had watched a parade which was lightly patrolled by police and had no one controlling the crowd or intersections. Children ran out into the road to grab candy and impatient motorists darted through gaps between parade floats. In that column, I laid blame on city and law enforcement officials. But what I saw during the 2018 Marysville…

A convenience previously reserved only for rule breakers will now be extended to law-abiding residents of North Lewisburg. At Tuesday night’s village council meeting it was noted that residents seeking to pay their water and sewer bills will now be able to use a credit or debit card. The convenience materialized as the village sought to expand the services of a company that takes payments for the village’s Mayor’s Court. GovPayNet allowed those incurring fines through Mayor’s Court to make payments with credit or debit cards. Village Financial Officer Jennifer McCombs explained that the company will now expand the services…

Marysville’s Chase Kilgore (34) is upended after gaining yardage on this play at Central Crossing on Friday. The Monarchs wrapped up their season with a 36-6 victory. (Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) –––– After polishing off Central Crossing 36-6 Friday night, Marysville’s 5-5 record doesn’t tell the story of the direction the program seems headed. While the .500 season doesn’t stand out as much of an improvement from last year’s 4-6 slate, the truth is that the Monarchs were a couple plays away from the state playoffs. Winnable games against Delaware, Olentangy Liberty and Dublin Coffman would have surely put…

Memorial Health’s Board of Trustees handled issues ranging from buried cables to multi-million dollar investment funds at Thursday night’s meeting. While approving the installation of a buried bundle of wires may not seem as weighty as matters of hospital capital, officials explained that the project offers the facility a crucial level of safety. The board approved a top end budget of $400,000 for the buried cable project, which will involve conduit with lines carrying everything from television signals to electricity. The cables will enter hospital property along Plum Street and run to the area of the new in-patient tower which…

Marysville’s Jake Carper (28) is up-ended by a pair of Hilliard Davidson defenders Friday evening. The Monarchs fell to the Wildcats, 28-7. (Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) –––– You know it’s a strange night on the gridiron when Hilliard Davidson and Marysville combine for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns through the air. The pair of run-first offenses showed some aerial highlights Friday night, as the Wildcats cruised past the Monarchs, 28-7. Marysville will occasionally approach double-digit passing attempts, so Monarch QB Walker Heard’s 88 yards and a touchdown on 5-for-13 passing was not abnormal. However, Davidson (8-1) rarely…

Marysville’s Jayden Simmons (13) tries to pick up yardage against Upper Arlington on Friday. MHS dropped its Homecoming game, 14-0. (Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) –––– Upper Arlington’s football team showed up at Marysville Friday night and ruined the Monarchs’ Homecoming game in every way possible, short of stealing the queen’s tiara. But you have to wonder, if the Golden Bears had wanted the headpiece, could the Monarchs have stopped them? In the 14-0 win, Upper Arlington whipped the lifeless Monarchs at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, holding the Monarch offense to just 76 total…

North Lewisburg Mayor Cheryl Hollingsworth told council members Tuesday night that one of her top goals is nearly accomplished. The mayor said that about 90 percent of the village streets have been repaved in recent years. That figure does not include state highways, which are improved at the discretion of the Ohio Department of transportation. Hollingsworth said upgrading the village infrastructure was among her top priorities when she was elected mayor. She said streets in the village have needed improvements for more than 20 years. Hollingsworth said the most recent work, a $441,000 grant funded project, is about 99 percent…

Jayden Simmons of MHS leaps for additional yardage at Westland on Friday. The Monarchs are now 4-3 after their 36-12 victory. (Journal-Tribune photo by Chad Williamson) –––– Sometimes when a team comes off of an emotional game, it can experience a lag in the next contest. When that happens, it can take a jolt to get the old engine running right again. After a hard-fought overtime loss to unbeaten Dublin Coffman last Saturday, Marysville was in cruise control Friday against overmatched Westland. The Monarchs scored in each of the first two quarters, but couldn’t really generate enough offense to put…

Menthol allows me to breathe freely Just about wherever I am, there is distinct smell that arrives with me. It’s not the odor of cigarettes, booze or even Aqua Velva. What enters the room with me is the smell of menthol. I grew up a fat kid, so I was programmed from birth to chew on things. After pacifiers, it was toys of all shapes and sizes. I chewed the appendages off more Star Wars action figures than I care to count. In school it was pencils and pens. You should have seen my mouthpieces in football. I chewed them…
