Aaron Lewis, shown above in a promotional photo, will headline the All Ohio Balloon Fest on Friday, taking the stage at 8:30 p.m. (Photo submitted) –––– No one can accuse Aaron Lewis of being a sellout. After millions of album sales with the band Staind and topping U.S. rock charts with songs like “It’s Been a While,” “Outside,” “So Far Away” and “Right Here,” Lewis wanted to try something different. So when Staind took a hiatus in 2011, he decided to try his hand at country music. Crossing over into country from another genre isn’t unheard of, but Lewis didn’t…

A Marysville teacher found himself as the subject of a social media storm recently over a pair of books he included on an Amazon Wish List. And while the topic of the books created the controversy, the only real problem school officials have is that proper district procedures weren’t followed. In fact, the books about gender issue could end up in local elementary schools, but as a resource rather than part of the curriculum. The debate centers around Edgewood Elementary third-grade teacher Austin Syar and a pair of books, that were included among others on an Amazon Wish List he…

A few weeks ago I brought another dog into my house after several years of bark-free living. My daughter and I immediately bonded with the puppy and pretty shortly thereafter I started having bouts of sadness because she will eventually die. The little dog I had previously came to my house as after being abandoned by his owners, a few months before my daughter was born. She and the puppy grew up together and he was obviously part of the family. He lived a good long while, but eventually started having periodic seizures until he eventually had one that didn’t…

I had an interesting, yet heartbreaking conversation with my daughter recently. She apparently suffers from anxiety when in very crowded rooms. This didn’t initially surprise me, because I am also no fan of packed places. They tend to be hot, smelly and people bump into you a lot. But this wasn’t the source of my daughter’s issues. She truly has a fear that something bad will happen – such as an act of violence. There is a big difference between feeling uncomfortable in a crowd and fearing you will be shot. I can not stand the fact that we have…

North Lewisburg officials are concerned that a community service program is being abused. Nearly 10 years into the village’s community clean-up program, the quantity of rubbish being collected is increasing, which is opposite of what should be expected village administrator Andy Yoder said at Tuesday night’s village council meeting. “We just don’t understand why it continues to grow,” Mayor Cheryl Hollingsworth said. The most recent spring clean-up week, held May 10-17, took in 32.62 tons of rubbish, more than 65,000 pounds of garbage. Recent figures put the North Lewisburg population in the neighborhood of 1,400 residents, meaning the clean-up day…

A middle school track coach has resigned after an incident in which an athlete asked to view a practice schedule and instead reportedly saw inappropriate material. With no discussion the Marysville Board of Education at its April meeting accepted the resignation of Bunsold Middle School Track Coach Brian Konopka, who does not teach in the district. Since then details surrounding the resignation have revealed that it was prompted by allegations from two students. According to Marysville Superintendent Diane Mankins, the district was contacted by a parent claiming an athlete saw inappropriate material on the coach’s phone when he was attempting…

We send our children to high school to teach them to be problem solvers. With all the world’s information at their fingertips, teens no longer need to use instruction time to memorize facts and obviously research time is greatly reduced. This leaves more time to focus on understanding concepts and conditioning their brains to solve any problem that college, job or life throws at them. Meanwhile, their parents can’t even find a parking lot. My daughter graduates from Marysville on Saturday and the lead-up to the ceremony has shown me that parents can sometimes be panicky, inconsiderate, needy and just…

Marysville is home of the Monarchs, the king of the jungle, but when the district’s new football stadium opens next school year the facility could also host the king of beers, Budweiser. On Thursday night, Marysville’s Board of Education saw first reading of a new policy that would allow alcohol to be served at the district’s recently-named IMPACT Stadium, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open in the fall. If approved at the June meeting, the policy would mark the first time the sale of alcohol would be permitted on school grounds. Superintendent Diane Mankins said the policy…

Figuring out how many teachers to hire for kindergarten is kind of like Wal-Mart knowing how many staffers to bring in for Black Friday. The answer never reveals itself until you open the doors. Marysville Superintendent Diane Mankins told school board members Tuesday night that 21 more students have been enrolled kindergarten than at this same point last year. This is coupled with the fact that 31 students have enrolled in an Alternative Kindergarten program which allows young 5-year-olds to attend half-day classes. Traditional kindergarten students attend school all day, every day. Despite the apparent bump in enrollment, Mankins was…
