Students at Triad are reaping the benefits of expanded reading intervention services, while educators and administrators are hoping the grant-funded program can stay in place as long as possible. Officials at the Union County Health Department are working to share their enthusiasm for the outdoor recreational opportunities in the area. Tamisha Matus, Creating Healthy Communities coordinator at UCHD, shared the new Union County Great Outdoors Map with Board of Health members. “This is a foundation for us moving forward,” Matus said. Jerome Township is one step closer to building a second fire station. The trustees unanimously accepted a bid for the construction of Station 211 during their meeting Tuesday. “It’ll be a wonderful thing for the safety of our residents,” said Trustee Chair Megan Sloat. Robertson Construction Services, based in Heath, submitted the lowest bid of four bidders. The company bid a base price of $4.114 million, along with an additional $144,900 for alternates, including flooring, lighting and countertop upgrades. Plain City Council members recently heard the first reading of an ordinance that would rezone a nearly 80-acre property to allow for Phase II of the Madison Meadows residential development, depicted above. Local officials are urging residents to ensure carbon monoxide detectors are present and functioning within their homes. “Because carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas, we often are not going to have a warning unless we have detectors in our homes,” said Jennifer Thrush, public information officer for the Union County Health Department. Plain City Council is working to ensure the right administrators are in place to guide the village. During Monday’s meeting, council members discussed their search for a new village administrator, as well as the agreement with their current law director. Mayor Jody Carney, who sits on the administrator search committee, told council the contractor guiding recruitment efforts would like more information on where to seek an administrator. Law Director Paul Lafayette emphasized that council members, the mayor and the village administrator each have specific roles. “The idea is, you guys stick to your jobs,” Lafayette said. Union County Health Department employees are all hands on deck as they work through the largest COVID-19 surge the area has seen. “We have been (accepting) help from really anybody with a pulse,” UCHD Epidemiologist Mary Salimbene Merriman said of contact tracing efforts within the health department. She said there were 1,517 cases of COVID-19 among county residents (not including individuals at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, Central Ohio Youth Center or West Central) in December. Triad educators are celebrating the benefits of adding additional intervention staff to their schools. Elementary School Principal Lee Claypool said the growth among students who are assisted by Title I intervention specialists, called the “FLOOD Team” at Triad, is “heartening.” In 2021, Claypool said the district doubled the number of students it could offer specialized assistance to by adding a second Title I teacher, both of whom provide additional instruction to at-risk students.
