Republican Danielle Sullivan has defeated Democrat LeighAnn Merriman Moots, and will be the next County Clerk of Courts.
According to unofficial results from the Union County Board of Elections Office, Sullivan secured 21,843 votes, about 69.4% of the total, while Merriman Moots earned 9,635, or 30.6%.
“I want to thank everyone who supported me in my campaign for the Clerk of Courts Office,” Sullivan said this morning. “I could not have won without the support of the residents of Union County.”
She thanked those who had supported her during the election and promised she would not let her supporters down.
“I look forward to being the next Clerk of Courts and making a difference in our community,” Sullivan wrote. “I love this office and believe in our work and I give you my word that I will put my very best into it.”
Sullivan currently works as the criminal felony manager in the clerk of courts office.
The clerk of courts office is in charge of filing, docketing, indexing and preserving all court pleadings for civil, felony criminal and domestic relations cases.
In addition to receiving documents for record, the clerk of courts is responsible for other varied duties, including carrying out all orders for the arrest of defendants, filing the indictment to the accused and administering all oaths and affirmations required or authorized by law.
In Union County, the clerk of courts oversees four offices — one serving the criminal court, one serving the domestic and civil courts and two title offices.
Current Clerk of Courts Teresa L. Nickle is not seeking reelection. In the primary election, Sullivan defeated Kellie M. Carson and Moots was unopposed.
