The Marysville Division of Police conducted a planned drug search on the Marysville Early College High School (ECHS) this morning.
According to a press release, at 7:50 a.m. today, the police used trained police dogs to search the student and teacher parking lots and classrooms of the school. The release states the police went through “a sampling” of classrooms in all areas of the building.
“Our search did not yield any hits,” ECHS Principal Ken Chaffin wrote in the release. “No drugs or illegal substances were found.”
Chaffin wrote he believes random, unannounced drug searches are one approach that “I believe can help build a safer school culture,” and help students and staff members feel safe.
The ECHS principal said he hopes these searches can encourage students to make safe decisions to “stay away from drugs and other illegal or harmful substances.”
Chaffin wrote he will never announce a drug search in advance, but the school plans to have additional canine drug searches in the future.
“The next search could be one year from now, or it could be tomorrow,” the principal wrote.
