Local first responders are estimating 60 cars were destroyed in a fire Friday afternoon at Kirby’s Auto Parts and Towing in Richwood.
Northern Union County Joint Fire and EMS District Chief Randy Riffle said his crew was dispatched to the business at 28 Marriot Street at 3:06 p.m. on Friday.
Riffle said employees at Kirby’s said they were not sure how the fire started. Employees said no one was in the area where they believe the fire began.
The chief said the fire was confined to the junkyard area and no structures were damaged during the incident.
One employee reported trouble breathing after the fire began, Riffle said, and was transported to Memorial Hospital by Delaware County EMS.
He said the incident is not under investigation, as finding the cause of the fire is unlikely.
“There’s no way we’re going to track down how it happened,” Riffle said.
Due to the heat at the scene, he said eight different departments were called to assist.
The Richwood Police Department, Leesburg Township Fire Department, Scioto Valley Fire Department, Radnor Township Fire Department, Marysville Fire Department, Delaware County EMS and the Union County Emergency Management Agency assisted at the scene.
Riffle said first responders were at Kirby’s until approximately 7 p.m. Friday night.
