A local man could be facing more than a decade in prison after allegedly attacking his live-in girlfriend.
The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Jeremy Jerome Zimmer, 38, of 265 Restoration Drive, Marysville. He is charged with one count each of felonious assault, domestic violence, abduction and aggravated menacing.
According to court documents, on Feb. 12, Marysville Police officers were dispatched to Zimmer’s Restoration Drive home on a report of a dispute. When police arrived, the victim told them her boyfriend, Zimmer, had assaulted her inside of their home.
The woman said she has been in a relationship with Zimmer for two years and they both live in the home.
Union County Prosecutor Dave Phillips said that at some point in the evening, the victim came home and found Zimmer had been drinking.
“She apparently poured out some alcohol that was remaining,” Phillips said.
According to the report, the woman told police she tried to go upstairs, “when Jeremy Zimmer attacked her from behind, pushing her onto the couch and putting his hands around her throat.”
Court documents describe that the woman was eventually able to get Zimmer off of her and run upstairs. Zimmer then allegedly, “grabbed her leg, pulling her down the stairs.”
He allegedly pinned her to the ground as she screamed for him to let her go and give her phone to her.
“Jeremy Zimmer prevented (the woman) from leaving the home and kept her phone away from her, preventing her from calling 911,” according to court documents.
Documents indicated the victim, “had bruising on her neck consistent with being choked and defensive wounds on her hands.”
Phillips said much of the encounter was captured on a home security device.
Phillips said that because Zimmer allegedly tried to strangle the woman, he was charged with felonious assault in addition to the domestic violence.
“Anytime we have a strangulation event, we are going to charge felonious assault,” Phillips said. “When someone is strangling someone, it doesn’t take long to cause serious physical harm or even death.”
He said with attempted strangulation, there can be physical problems, “that come forward later on.”
If convicted, Zimmer could face as many as 13 years in prison.
Zimmer has been released on his own recognizance and is set for a preliminary hearing March 25.
