A house in the 12000 block of Landon Road in Richwood was destroyed after an fire broke out on Saturday.
The Northern Union County Fire and EMS District (NUCFD) received a report of the house fire at 7:56 p.m. Saturday, Chief Randy Riffle said. He said his department was en route to the scene by 8:03 p.m.
Riffle said a preliminary investigation showed that the fire was accidentally caused by a burn pit. The official investigation will not be complete for roughly two weeks, the chief said.
Riffle said first responders were able to control the fire, but he believes the house is totaled.
“It was fully engulfed when we got the call,” he explained.
NUCFD was assisted by the Northwestern Joint Fire District, the Leesburg Township Fire Department, the Marysville Division of Fire, the Battle Run Fire District, the Scioto Fire District and the Richwood Police Department.
A firefighter from the Leesburg Township Fire Department sought medical attention at the scene, Riffle said.
Riffle explained that it appeared the residents of the house were “moving in a little bit of stuff.” The family, including two adults and two children, were not home at the time of the fire.
Riffle added that he contacted the American Red Cross, which is assisting the family following the fire.
NUCFD also received a report of a controlled brush fire in the 200 block of Grove Street in Richwood on Saturday at 8:35 p.m. Riffle sent the Richwood Police Department to investigate the fire and ensure that it was extinguished. He also sent an engine from the Northwestern Joint Fire District and a brush truck from the Leesburg Township Fire Department to clear the scene.
