Jonathan Alder Sixth graders in Angie Dickman’s class recently used archaeology to explore culture. Students learned about universals common to every culture – government, important figures, currency, religion and structures – by studying a penny. They then used those universals to create their own culture and designed artifacts to represent them. Each group buried their artifacts and other groups dug them up. The class will use the uncovered artifacts to learn about the other group’s culture and determine how their society was structured.
