Starting next month, the Marysville Public Library will be fine-free.
Both the Marysville and Raymond locations of the library will waive all fines for materials checked out on or after September 1.
Nieca Nowels, director of the Marysville Public Library, said fines accounted for so little of the library’s income that they are unnecessary to support it.
In 2018, she said fines accounted for less than a quarter of 1% of the library’s annual income.
Additionally, also in 2018, she said 36% of revenue came from the State of Ohio’s Public Library Fund, while 55% came from a property tax levy.
Given the source of their income, Nowels said she feels confident that the library will continue running smoothly, even without charging fines.
“It’s something many of our patrons have been asking for, and we are excited to be able to make this change for them,” she said.
Fees will still be charged for lost or damaged items. Items from the SearchOhio and OhioLink databases will still accrue fees, as well.
