Marysville elementary school parents learned recently that the district will soon begin the process of redistricting.
A letter sent to parents Thursday states that the district will begin the process of realigning elementary attendance boundaries for the 2020-21 school year.
“Our goal is to stabilize the wide range of enrollment levels in our K-4 buildings and allow for future growth,” the letter reads.
A task force will begin looking at new boundary options beginning this month. The task force is comprised of parents from each building, the director of transportation, the district enrollment specialist, the elementary principals and the assistant superintendent.
“We did this process about five years ago and we are following a similar process this time,” Superintendent Diane Mankins said. “We have volunteers from each building participating and look to have a recommendation to the board in the spring.”
The district has contracted with Cooperative Strategies, a company that specializes in redistricting across the country. Cooperative Strategies is the same company district officials used when it redrew elementary school boundaries for the 2015-16 school year. The district set a maximum of $15,000 for the contract.
Once the task force has recommended map options created, the district will solicit wider parental input throughout December.
“In December, each building will host an open forum where committee members will be present to get feedback,” Mankins said.
The district will also have an online survey available for families to offer input.
After the first of the year, the task force will digest the feedback from parents, adjust the maps and make a final recommendation to the superintendent. Mankins will then bring the finalized map for board of education approval.
The district hopes to contact families who will be impacted by the new map by February or March.
Principals will hold open houses in May for students and families who will be switched into different buildings.
