North Union students and faculty are dealing with tragedy this week after an eighth grade student committed suicide Tuesday evening.
According to Union County Coroner’s Office Investigator Lance Emberling, the office received a call to the scene on Fanders Road Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. The female student had died of a gunshot wound to the head.
According to a letter from North Union Superintendent Rich Baird posted on the district’s website Wednesday, school officials had counseling from “local professionals” and clergy available Wednesday.
The letter states that counseling is available through the rest of the week “as needed.”
“The North Union community will remain strong in support of these families,” Baird wrote. “Positive support is important to all families and only accurate information should be shared.”
Emberling said the case is still under investigation.
Baird wrote that any residents with questions may call his office at 740-943-2509.
