The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Route 347 at U.S. 33 just inside Logan County Thursday.
According to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at about 3:40 p.m. a 2013 Kia Optima driven by Billy Cowan, 57, of Bellefontaine, was traveling east on U.S. 33 exiting onto Route 347. He failed to yield at a stop sign at the end of the exit ramp and drove into the path of a 2017 Chevrolet Express van, driven by Thomas Klopfenstein, 50, of Wapakoneta going northbound on Route 347.
Cowan’s vehicle continued into the southbound lane of Route 347 and was struck head on by a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Melissa Ragland, 38, of Springfield.
According to the release, neither Klopfenstein nor Ragland were injured. Cowan was taken to Memorial Hospital where he later died.
The crash is still under investigation, though the release says the neither alcohol or drugs are thought to have been a factor in the crash.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Ohio Department of Transportation, Perry Township EMS and Allen Township EMS.
