A pair of Union County students has been nominated for appointment to U.S. Military Service Academies.
Emily Parrish and Samuel Shroyer have been nominated for slot available at the service academies requiring congressional recommendations.
Parrish, of Marysville, is a student at Delaware Christian School. She was nominated by Senator Sherrod Brown to attend the Air Force Academy.
Shroyer, of Marysville, attends Marysville High School. Senator Rob Portman nominated Shroyer to the Military Academy at West Point and the Merchant Marine Academy.
Portman’s nominations came as part of an annual reception and ceremony to congratulate the service academy nominees and their families.
“Our nominees are among the best and the brightest from Ohio, and I would be proud to have them serve our country in our Armed Forces,” Portman said in a release announcing the nominations.
In announcing his nominations, Brown said he is “grateful for their dedication to serving our country.”
“Ohio schools are training young women and men who will be the next generation of military leaders. I am honored to nominate these outstanding students for our prestigious U.S. Military Service Academies,” said Brown. “These Ohioans embody the integrity and courage needed to represent and uphold the values of our nation.”
A nomination does not guarantee acceptance into a service academy. The admissions board at the individual service academy ultimately decides who receives an appointment.
Both senators said their nominations are based on the recommendation of a volunteer advisory committee, assembled by the individual congressman.
Brown said his committee, comprised of former academy graduates, active service members, veterans, parents of academy attendees, and community leaders from throughout the state, “conducted rigorous interviews before selecting the final candidates.”
Portman said he was unable to attend the ceremony in person because he remained in Washington D.C., due to the government shut down.
“This annual reception is one of my favorite days of the year, and while I was disappointed that I was unable to be with the nominees in person, I was pleased to be able to call in and congratulate them,” Portman said in the release. “The distinguished members of the Review Board helped me and our office guarantee that young individuals like the ones we selected this year have a chance to get into one of the service academies, and I am grateful for their dedication to continuing Ohio’s strong tradition of high acceptance rates.”
