The 2022 Union County Fair, which took place from July 24-30, saw another successful Junior Fair Livestock Sale, as six reserve champion records fell on Saturday.
The Junior Fair Livestock Sale has been setting records almost annually among grand and reserve champions.
According to a report from Richwood Banking Company, which clerks the sale, a total of 303 participants sold animals at this year’s fair, up from 300 in 2021. This year, 30 participants showed chickens, one participant showed a dairy product, 20 participants showed ducks, 33 participants showed dairy feeders, 48 participants showed goats, 51 participants showed hogs, 29 participants showed lambs, 55 participants showed rabbits, 15 participants showed steers and 21 participants showed turkeys.
The report stated that buyers spent $520,064.07 at the 2022 livestock sale, which is a decrease from last year. The 2021 livestock sale raised roughly $560,000, with the record-breaking $40,000 sale of the grand champion steer shown by Camdyn Burns. The 2020 livestock sale raised $454,721, which was a record at the time.
This year, records were set for the sale of:
-Reserve champion steer shown by Cooper Phelps for $14,000. The previous record was $13,000, set in 2021.
-Reserve champion dairy feeder shown by Hailey Dee for $4,000. The previous record was $3,720, set in 2016.
-Reserve champion barrow shown by Levi Wheeler for $4,100. The previous record was $3,400, set in 2018.
-Reserve champion turkey shown by Katelyn Vollrath for $2,150. The previous record was $2,100, set in 2021.
-Reserve champion pen of four broilers shown by Gabriel Bertin for $3,600. The previous record was $2,500, set in 2021.
-Reserve champion pen of three rabbits shown by Shelby Jones for $2,250. The previous record was $2,200, set in 2020.
The 2023 Union County Fair is scheduled for Sunday, July 23, through Saturday, July 29.
