The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves is hosting a free program to allow residents to explore Big Darby Creek State and National Scenic River at McKitrick Park in Plain City on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Attendees will be able to search for wildlife and learn how the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program works with community volunteers to determine stream health based on animals found in the water.
The Village of Plain City Department of Parks and Recreation will provide a coloring station for children and small nets for field and river adventures.
Big Darby Creek is considered one of the highest quality rivers of its size in the Midwest. Forty-four species of freshwater mussels and 100 species of fish, many of which are rare or endangered, have been recorded in the river.
“One of the best things about the river is that the water is inviting,” said Regional Scenic Rivers Manager Heather Doherty. “It makes you want to dip your feet in on a hot day.”
Participants are advised to wear clothing that can get wet and closed-toed shoes.
McKitrick Park is located on East Main Street in Plain City.
